We usually have Ham ( I use a can of crushed pineapples and throwing over the sliced ham before baking it)

Mashed potatoes, stuffing, stuffed mushrooms

Used to make baby lamb chops. Brush the outside with mustard and top with bread crumbs. Bake until medium rare.

Lasagna used to be the appetizer. Holidays became so small, so it is too much work for all that food for small amount of people.

I know how small Holidays get believe me I used to host an open house Christmas Eve for about 200 people. So I've been scaled back. LOL wish I could do a huge thing this year, don't know 200 people in my whole state!!!

We’re Orthodox Christians so we do Christmas in January. For December holidays when people are with their families / stores are closed, we eat cakes, cookies, etc.

But Christmas Eve [January 6] there are a lot of traditional foods. There is the česnica or money bread where a coin is placed in the dough. We can’t eat this particular bread until Christmas Day cause we’re fasting but it is part of the foods on the table. Whoever gets the piece with the coin will be the lucky one for the year.

Cause of the fast from eggs and dairy we eat another bread called pogača. We eat this with a vegetarian soup whether it is tomato or bean. I figure it makes sense to say all the dishes are vegetarian on this night, like sarma too. [cabbage rolls]

Before we start to eat we eat suvo voće which is a fruit compote, for us mainly of prunes.

On Christmas Day is a meal of cabbage rolls with meat, ham, varieties of potatoes and sausages and lots of sweets.

But, we are not sure what this year’s meal will look like cause my fiancé is Russian and we need to have some food for him. But he is an Orthodox Christian too so it is similar.

In Northern Italy where I live we don't eat at Christmas eve, only a light broth or something like that. We need to preserve hunger for Christmas day! In the South of Italy however they have a traditional MAJOR meal on Xmas eve and they cook fish in a variety of ways. On Christmas day every family has their own menu. For mine it is polenta with stew. For all Italians, Christmas is not Christmas without a "panettone", a traditional cake with candied fruit and raisins, the panettone is served with "mascarpone", a soft and very fat cheese sweetened with sugar, eggs and liquor.

Growing up we usually had a turkey or ham.
Often we would go to my Grandma and Grandpa house. Always fun with the cousins around. I loved it. We would steal the black olives and put them on our fingers
(doesnt everyone?) and pop them in our mouths.

Our Christmas might be Christmas eve or Christmas day. It would depend on when my dad had to work (police dept...so you never knew)

Since my kids are grown now.....its alot less fun.
This year, we will be having a rib roast. Probably taters of some sort, and maybe some glazed carrots.

(note to self......get more carrots and some orange juice)

I was thinking of rib roast also, but I am still not sure what I am doing this year. I am not going crazy with food as I don't have any family here and really don't want to go anywhere. My best friend growing up live here and her Dad wants me and the dog to come there, but it's about 120mile round trip and I hate driving that far on a holiday. I might but it just seems dumb for a holiday that really is not all that fun for me.

Heck, I'm spending the holidays with a Jewish family, so it will be brisket, latkes and maybe mac and cheese.

Mac and cheese with brisket? Not a usual combination.

Apparently it is if you're Jewish at Hannukah

Serving a dairy dish with meat is the part that isn't usual.
