All my life, I was told by my mother that we were Cherokee. I spoke with my aunt who is 86 and she said , it was not Cherokee, it was Chickasaw. I look up my grandfathers last night and found his fathers name in the chickasaw registry. the blood line came through my great grandmother, so am one fourth Chickasaw

Sokie,it is so strange to think you were one thing and then find out you are something else LOL..
I was born in IL. and raised in chicago but moved to oklahoma as a child and went back and forth from IL to Oklahoma.

I think what the reason that my great mother's blood line was kept such a secret within our family was because she was going to be placed on a reservation and she was probably passed off as white, since was married to a french man. She was very unhappy in this society . My family always acted like it was some huge secret that my great grandmother was Native American and it used to make me mad but now I am begining to see that they were protecting her.

My fiance is Mexican/Cherokee

As for me.... well Ive always been fascinated with Native Americans as long as I can remember. I really don't know much about my father's heritage or ancestor. They came from in the deep eastern Kentucky area close to the Virginia border... on the Appalachian mountains. My sister swears up and down that we are cherokee but my aunt says we are not. I really don't know. I do know that the people in the eastern kentucky never been open about their true heritage and now after all these years its frustrating to know where you come from. I think my aunt once told me that there was black dutch in our families... not sure what that means. Sooo its just a big question ...

I have been told I'm part Cherokee. Seem to be the "standard Eastern US mix" - Irish, Scottish, Dutch, German & Cherokee...

Couldn't prove it, to save my life, however... That's just what family members have always told me. (my "white supremacist mother" urged me never to tell anyone about the "Indian" side of the family, so I'm pretty sure it's legit! She wouldn't be worried about it getting "exposed", if it wasnt!)

Attempts to search out the details, find some "proof", have not been terribly successful, however.

In fact, I'm still looking for anyone who might know of a Cherokee lineage related to the surnames Heaton or Isdell?

I think I might have some very distant memories of meeting some of the "native" side of the family, but I was probably 3-4 or younger, when that happened, so I'm really not sure. (and some in my family have an obvious agenda to keep me in the dark, about this issue) Are they memories, or just figments of an over-active imagination??
