Default Lack of air-conditioning at NCCIW

I have been very concerned about my daughter and other inmates at NCCIW during this extreme heat. I was told that NCCIW has air conditioning but they do not use it. If this is true, I can't imagine them not using it just during this extreme heat we have had lately. My daughter told me that many of them have had heat related problems and heat strokes.

Can anyone tell me if they know the circumstances regarding this matter at NCCIW.

Thanks,

Peggylost

Who told you they don't use it? In heat like this, I would think it'd be criminal to not use it--seriously. If an inmate had a critical heat-related problem, that Super could catch serious hell.

The problem is, if they haven't been using it until recently and they turn it on, it could take a long time for the facility to cool down. And, in a facility like that (the open floor plans and all) the AC would be marginal at best. I'm fairly certain they don't have thermostats in every cell/dorm, which would make controlling the air flow and temp. very difficult. That's why most warehouses don't have AC or heat...too hard to control. (I come from a HVAC family )

If you're truly concerned, call the prison. If you don't get an acceptable response, call Raleigh.

A lot of facilities do not have AC. Those that don't usually have some large fans to bring some relief.

Default I know about NCCIW and Black Mtn.

There is an AC system in all the dorms at NCCIW, but in most dorms only the Admin Hall gets the AC. The admin hall is where the unit managers and sergeants work. They let the heat come to the whole dorm in winter but they block off the ducts when it gets warm and they start to use the AC. The medical dorm has AC, and the infirmary ,too. We used to be about dying in the close packed dorms when it was 100 degrees then when we would get called to the sergeants office in the admin hall it was like a blast of cold air when entering the area.
What do you want to know about Black Mtn.?

prison isnt a 5 star hotel, its not suppose to be. When we comment crimes, we are punished for it, so she is being punished for her crimes.

No prison isnt a 5 star hotel BUT inmates are human too!!! No offense but there are some people who only chime in to put negative thoughts on the board! I would takes mels advice and call the unit and get info if you can. With the upcoming summer, there will be a lot of problems with health and heat if there is no source of air.

Being punished is being in prison. Being in prison doesn't mean getting treated inhumanely or unfairly. No AC is one thing...no AC with oodles of people living together is quite another!

we had a/c .. their were sensors in each dorm and the thermostat was in the
sgt office. it was set to I believe 78 in the summer and I think 65 in the winter. I am not sure of that.

Those temp settings are better than nothing at all but 65 in the winter is still cold when it is 30 outside. On really cold days sometimes my thermostat was set on 75 and it was still chilly sometimes. But I guess 78 is tolerable when it is hot though. But I guess either is useless when some camps have busted windows or cracks around the doors big enough for a cat to crawl under.

Not to fuel the flames here...but it's only 78 or 65 near the thermostat.

actually - no the sensors are in each dorm. each dorm has it's own
heat pump.
if they keep the doors closed it is pretty nice in there actually.
but if they prop the doors open it gets hot quick.

Angry

Not to add fuel to the flames but are you an HVAC worker? I am. Guarantee those thermostats are crap.
My boyfriend is in lino lakes in Minnesota and we have 89° right now and I guarantee the temperature in the prison is 5 to 10 degrees higher with the moisture bringing lots of humidity.I visited him today and he told me they wouldn't even bring service dogs in because the heat is definitely for them but it's okay for the human beings to be in it.
That's torture!!!!
