Default Will an inmate be allowed to attend his sons funeral in California?

My cousin was killed in a work related accident a few days ago and his dad is in Sacraments prison in CA. Does anybody know the procedure for an inmate to attend an immediate family members funeral? Do they allow inmate to go to funerals in CA? Please help and let me know asap.

I have not heard of a CDCR inmate being permitted to attend a funeral. I've done a quick search and cannot find regulations outlining the allowance for it. From the few mentions of inmate furlough for funerals in other states, the inmate's family had to bear the cost of secure transport and officer chaperones.

If someone knows differently, I hope they follow up this post.

It's one of the harsh realities of incarceration and I'm so very sorry your brother, and your family, is having to experience it. My thoughts are with you.

OK, a little deeper digging shows CA does have some provision for temporary removal (leave). It's a bit complicated and does place the expense of security and transportation on the family.

You can find it here, page 567.

I'd give it a quick read and then contact the ombudsman and chaplain at his facility.

Best of luck.

Im so sorry for your loss. I hope that they will allow him to attend the funeral. Its very sad when parents outlive their children.

If they deny the request would it be possible for someone to video the service? That way there is some record of the ceremony that he would be able to watch later. They may even allow the Chaplin to arrange for him to see it while he's still there. I really have no idea if that's possible but its worth a try.
