Unhappy Will Friends Outside be closing in October?

Good afternoon I have a question does anyone know if it's true or not that the friends outside will be closing statewide starting October 15,2016? If
That happens a lot of people will have a harder time visiting and not only that it helped others with clothes if needed to change. I hope this service isn't taken away. I know I used them before I would hate to see them shut down.

I don't see anything on their website that says they will. They do provide a needed service, I hope that's not true.

This almost happened in 2009 due to the budget crunch, but was averted very last-minute when their contract was continued.

I have not heard anything about Friends Outside getting cut at the current time.

Given that October 15th is a Saturday, is it possible that a specific visiting center is going to be closed on that specific day and that it's a one day closure (maybe due to lack of available staff) and not a permanent closure?

I hope they don't close for good since I know sometimes I have to go there to change or even wait there till my appointment time.

I heard that rumor too that they will be closing as of Oct 15th, unless an issue is resolved. I am going to email their HQ and ask, since I am depending on them being without a car and from overseas.

I'm going to visit my LO this weekend, I'll see if I can find anything out from one of the programs directly. If there is any truth to the rumor and I find out, I'll let you know. If there is not, I will also let you know.

I called the main office for the friends outside and yes the rumor is true as of October 15,2016 the friends outside will close statewide. And not sure when if ever they will reopen again due to budget issues.

Wow. Thanks for that info. That's going to be a nightmare for so many folks.

On that note....Cali visitors, we know that all of us dread "the trailer", but with their closure it means we need to be a little extra supportive of the new folks. There are going to be visitors who are turned away because their clothing doesn't pass inspection and they didn't know to bring extras. I see it happen all of the time.

Let's do what we can to help, be kind, be understanding. This is a loss for all of us.

Friends Outside has been a tremendous resource and did a bit of leg work for me to help Dee get connected with some resources about a year or so into her time when her ex- finally formally filed for divorce (they had been legally separated for some time, she had planned to file herself but wasn't rushing because as she figured it he could at least use the tax benefit for the kids, but he had met someone new and decided to remarry.) If they give up the ghost I'll be sad. Again...I'll check in with them this weekend if I'm able and see if I can confirm this, or if they've heard of anything else.

There are so few resources connecting inmates to loved ones and advocating and acting as middle men/women in some ways. They're limited in how much they can do, but I'd rather have that than nothing. It makes me even more relieved that (knock on wood) time is short.....

Hi everyone,

It is true that the employees at Friends Outside were given lay off notices effective October 15, 2016. Prison and statewide IFC members and Warden representatives were on a conference call with headquarters today.

Headquarters did state that they are doing everything they can to keep Friends Outside in our visitors centers and avoid a closure. In the event Friends Outside no longer is contracted with CDCR and removes their employees, Headquarters is working on plans to try and keep minimal services open in the trailers for families and loved ones- i.e., at a minimum- a place of shelter and change of clothes.

Just so everyone knows, the trailers and all of the clothing and supplies inside the trailers is owned by CDCR. Friends outside only provides staffing.

In the event the contract is severed, CDCR has committed to do everything they can to keep the trailers open. But please keep in mind, that does not mean there won't be any interruption in services. They are trying to avoid any interruption in services but cannot commit to that as of today.

Headquarters is working on many options to keep as many of the offered services open as they can. More updates will be provided as plans and services are identified.

Headquarters has stated that friends outside is a nationwide organization that contracts with CDCR for the trailer services and any questions related to the lay offs should be directed to FO offices.

Please watch the CDCR website and Statewide IFC website for updates as they arise- on the call today CDCR committed to keeping their website updated as well as provide updated communication with the Statewide IFC. www.cdcr.ca.gov and www.statewide-ifc.com

Hope this helps.

Sounds like you are on top of it. That is a wealth of information!

Is there anything any of us can do to advocate for renewal of the contract?

It is not that the contract needs renewed. The contract is good through June 2017. It is a bigger issue than that. I don't know the details but I think it i something between CDCR and Friends Outside that they are trying to work through...

I *think* they are still open. I read a short announcement on another site that said they did not send out final notice to employees, but I can't find it. If I do I'll repost here.

I did go into the Friends Outside trailer at Soledad Sunday Oct 16. They were open. I spoke to one of the women working there. She told me the contract had been extended. I forget how long she said but I seem to recall untill June. She stated that CDCR has to make something available. If Friends Outside were to no longer have a contract with CDCR, something must be provided, be it another contractor or CDCR themselves. That was her understanding, I don't represent that as "official" information. Other than to say they are still in operation.
