Default Should Visitor area vending machines be run by "us"?

On some of the threads here there has been comments related to the current vending machine contractor and the outrageous prices they charge. These got me to thinking. Could "we" run the vending machines? By "we" I mean some non-profit group (such as IFC or "Friends on the Outside, or PTO, etc.) related to prison visitors. Basically underbidding the current contractor, hiring someone to service the machines, and taking charge of the service we ourselves use. By doing that we could: 1) rein in the costs, 2) have a funding stream for visitor resources, 3) control what's in the machines, and 4) stop getting ripped off!

So: comments? thoughts? Think I'm full of feathers?

Who told you that? That doesn't sound correct. If the food is frozen and there are no fresh salads why would you vote to not replace this vendor? I'm confused by your response.

I vote yes!! Not so much because of prices (although they are high) but more because I hate that most of what is in the machine is rotten!! With the exception of soda and candy of course.

Thanks for clarifying that. I don't think he gave you correct information. I think the contract has some definite end date.

California statutes require that services be openly placed under "Sunshine" principles. I found a case where vending machine servicing was put out to public bid. See here, http://www.bidsync.com/DPX?ac=view&auc=1343709 . Granted this was not for the VSP facility, but I think we can assume that similar statutes would apply. In addition (as can be seen in the bid description on that link) such a service contract would include standard terms for California bid contracts. Again as in the bid referenced, it states: "Note that all agreements entered into with the State of California will include, by reference, General Terms and Conditions and Contractor Certification Clauses that may be viewed and downloaded at Internet site www.ols.dgs.ca.gov/Standard+Language." Included among the Standard Agreement terms are "The term of this Agreement" with a stated termination date.

Default Vending machine food

I voted yes, even though I am new here and haven't yet experienced a visit and the food (but from what I have already heard, the food is not nice).
My friend was moved there in December and I'm finally going to be there to visit a total of 3 days this month (flying in from Massachusetts).
It would be nice if I could get him some decent food while we are visiting.
