When I made it down to a mininum security facility, I volunteered for the roadside clean up crew just to get away from the damn prison, other inmates, and guards and have the opportunity to see real life. (if you've been there, you know what I mean) One thing that was very cool was when people waved at you. They knew we were convicts, but gave friendly waves anyway. (some drivers, very few, were jerks, but so what?) Those kind acts were truly good for the soul.
So, when you are out and about and see a chain gang or inmates working along the road, give them a smile and wave as you pass by.

Aww, I always do that, but I wasn't sure if they even cared, or if they just thought I was trying to flirt with them. It's nice to know that it does help.

Whenever i visit i waved to the inmates and if i happen to be walking past them in the parking lot i always greet them.I think some people out there don't see them as human beings, its there loss i have met and made bestfriends with inmates and families of inmates and i'm blessed to have them in my life.... so as for me i will keep waving

I always wave at the buses since I was a lil girl I could remember waving at every county bus I seen, who would of thought I would be in love with an inmate but what can I say it is what it is... I know it puts smiles on there faces to know a stranger cares to wave to the someone on the other side of the window! I know I'm off subject but around here u hardly see prisoners working out on the freeways etc... When I do I do wave!
I forgot about the *$@&^ buses. Waving at a prisoner transport bus would provide joy to those inside. Bureau of Prisons and US Marshall transport buses are easy to spot if you know what you're looking for. (BOP 'bus therapy' is one rough way to exist in this world)

Wow. I guess I'd never thought of that. Thank you for the suggestion. I live close to a number of prison units, and there are always inmates around somewhere doing something. I will make it a point to wave to them from now on.
Wave to the guards, too. They make crap money and many are doing time along with those they guard, just in smaller pieces. The public looks down on them, they are at the bottom of the law enforcement hierarchy, and many of us hate them. So, a wave is ok.

Good Point Off Paper... I know I wouldnt want to be locked in every day with 1,500 pissed off men that hate me before I even walk through the gate!!!

I thought your original post was a nice idea...but this one shows what a thoughtful and well balanced person you are. Very considerate! Especially with you having been on the other side of the gates.
I have never seen a road crew/chain gang before, although I know they're out there. If I ever did...I'd give 'em a sign too.
