Default Have GED Classes Been Eliminated State Wide?

I know MECC has eliminated all educational programs. Does anyone know if this is true of all Missouri prisons or do some of them (level 5) still offer GED classes?

I do believe all level 5 prisons have eliminated GED classes.

I don't know about lower level prisons.

Makes you wonder how a guy is supposed to get the required for parole GED, eh?

Thanks all for your responses !! Is "work release" the same as "getting a paid job"? My guy is volunteering in the kitchen but would really like to work in the paint shop.

Okay, all persons on supervision in MO have to pay 30 bucks a month to intervention fees, unless they are disabled.

Where's that money going to? If I could find another job, I'd be out of the DOC so fast it's not funny. I worked years to get a degree so I could do what I do and thought intervention fees would FUND programs.

Treatment and GED programs, along with others, are now gone. Where's the money going?

It's time to start writing to the legislators in your areas.

Artdiva, I've written to legislators numerous times, not only them, but the Governor himself to no avail. Not about this specific issue but let me tell you, the Govt. is an entity all of themselves and the little people have no voice.

My husband paid those fees, even being 100% disabled then after months of proving to them he was disabled by official documents by Social Security and the VA, they finally stopped making him pay but after he was arrested and revoked, during the 2 months he was in county, they continued charging him the $30 fee so when he got to FRDC, they took $60 out of his account I had sent into him for the fees they claimed he owed. Which he did not. Doesnt matter though, we'll never be reimbursed.

Back to writing to legislators, I do encourage it but dont get your hopes up it will do any good. I have sent so many letter from the Governor, down to the legislators and everyone in between plus D.O.C in Jeff. City and requested a face to face meeting with the DOC Director and was denied, saying he is a busy man and to put my issues in writing and mail to them. I told them I had mailed 3 letters with my issues in writing to them with one unsatisfactory response, the other two letters were ignored.
NO response from the Governor or legislators on any of my letters.

To add, I am a 17 year veteran employee for the State of Missouri. I am a caseworker for Juvenile Offenders so I understand the "system" to a point, although DOC is much more rigid than DYS. I am also a taxpayer in this State. I love my job but I am so dis-heartened by the experience my husband and I have been through and still go through with the DOC, I am ashamed on most days to be a State Employee myself.
I would never treat my "youth Offenders" and their families the way my husband and I have been treated. Its, at times, inhumane, humiliating, and disrespectful. The stories I have that my husband and I have been through during the past 10 months would make even the hardest at heart shed a tear.

What ?? I am so confused. Please explain to me who pays intervention fees? Okay, This is the way I thought it worked: When a person goes from jail to prison there are fees to be paid. My guy had to pay into victims compensation. I also understand there are restitution fees that some have to pay; not in my guys case though. Now that he is sentenced to prison I've been under the impression he gets a monthly stipend (except for the past 2 months, and that's supposed to pick up again in July). I've also been under the impression that some inmates have paying jobs, something like $30 a month. Am I right? Wrong? Now I'm totally confused after reading about intervention fees. So please tell me, who pays intervention fees and is "work release" the same as "getting a paid job"? My guy is volunteering in the kitchen but would really like to work in the paint shop. Maybe he is confused and that is why I am confused. I don't know......Please try to explain all this craziness to me.

I wish they'd explain where the money went to- it's not in any program I've seen as they've all been whacked. As I work in an institution, I hear about the cuts the DOC makes and it is really hard to find ANY free resources in most communities. St. Louis and KC probably have the most, as their population is dense.

This just pisses me off and I'm sorry- I don't mean to be offensive. I just can't believe that money is being taken from offenders and they get nothing in return. I know for a fact the PO's haven't had a raise in years, along with the caseworkers, substance abuse counselors, etc- so it's not going to pay field staff. I do know that these fees paid for laptop computers, called Dell Tablets for field officers. I'm sure that helps the clients- Not.

It's supposed to be fees paid for INTERVENTION for clients and I'm not seeing where it goes.

The money for the fees is residing with the proceeds from the out of control prices in the canteen. Sheesh - how could you not know that? Good heavens!

I have also written, emailed, bugged, bothered, etc everyone I can think of about any problem I have had with the DOC. No matter what, we are, and will remain, the whiney wives of incarcerated men who are lying to them! Even when caught RED FREAKING HANDED in a lie, the DOC will not admit they are wrong, but I digress on another issue! My bad.

I have requeseted the auditors office do an accounting of the money from the canteen and nothing has happened. Tax payer or not, we are nothing to these people!

But, don't give up, cause every once in a great while you got someone that will listen. When you do, let me know cause I haven't found one yet!

Amen Christy and ArtDiva. I thought I was the only one being ignored by "the important people" in our state!

As if canteen isnt already a rip-off, the state my husband is in now charges 10% right off the top for TAXES! Say I send hubby $50 for canteen, that State takes $5 before giving him anything. Then they take another % for his "savings" which he does not need when he is released, he needs the money now for canteen, that is why I send it to him!

I feel like screaming but it would'nt do any good. OMG!!!

isn't rip-off another word for stealing? And aren't people who steal supposed to be behind bars?

Just know that many of us who work for the DOC feel exactly like you do, we complain every day and somehow- we hope to make them listen!

Where's the money for canteen go to? I don't know the answer to that and I may be able to find out today, unless someone else finds out first.

You could look at it that way. Same way it's a class C felony to knowingly serve inedible food to prisoners! Yet, they still do.

Ah, the DOC. Someday they I can tell them how I really feel without fear of the non-existent retaliation. I blame every single gray hair on my head on them. They owe me one hell of a dye job!
