Default Getting Married in North Carolina - Minimum Security

Hey Everyone. Just wanted to let you all know how to get married in North Carolina when your fiance' is in Minimum Security / Honor Grade.

1. Each of you must write a letter to the program's official stating your name and age and that you want to marry such and such person.

2. The Programs Official then contacts your finace' telling him/her that they need to get with the Chaplain and setup couseling sessions. Get this, it is most important to them to schedule the sessions around your schedule. Whatever is more convenient for you.

3. We had 4 sessions, 2 were during the week and I changed the last 2 to Sunday before our visit. They are usually an hour long and it is a very good thing to have. I beleive all couples should have sessions whether in prison or not. Depending on the Chaplain. They just want to make sure it is what you really want and also want to discuss your history and relationship. We had a great Chaplain who was very considerate and did not try to talk me out of it. He just wanted to know why we did not want to wait and all that.

4. During our 4th session we decided on a date and the Chaplain got all the information ready. Such as who will be at the wedding and what time. We will be having an actual church wedding, and a reception. We can have 5 people and 1 of his peers can also attend.

5. The following Wednesday I received the affadavit that was filled out by the Programs Director and Notarized. This is to be submitted to the Register of Deeds to get the marriage license.

6. I went to the register of deeds in Mecklenburg County and it was so easy to get the license. I gave them the affadavit and filled out the application, paid my $50.00 fee and $10.00 for a certified copy so I can get my name changed, then they gave me the license and I was on my way. They even gave me a newleywed kit. I will not tell you what is in it. It can be a little surprise.

7. Once the ceremony is done, the chaplain is to fill out both copies and mail them back to the register of deeds. If you pay the $10.00 you will get a certified copy of the marrage license.

Now all we have to do is say I DO!!! I do not know what will occur in the ceremony but I am sure it will be wonderful and the best day.

I can wait on the honeymoon I am a patient person.

I have information regarding medium security marriages if anyone is interested.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best Wishes to Everyone

Shannon

Default NORTH CAROLINA Prison Inmate Marriage Q&A thread

The Prison Weddings Team is trying to provide inmate marriage information for all states.

As yet, the Prison Weddings team has not been able to access the Department of Corrections Rules for getting married in your state. Its our hope that you can help us with our project.

Do you have a copy of the policy/rules for getting married? If so, please post it in the thread below or let the Prison Weddings Team Member who posted this thread know where to get that information.

If you have gotten married in a correctional facility in your state, please provide the details and tell us of your experience in that same thread.

1. Did you have any counsling
2. How long did the whole process take
3. Did you have to find your own minister
4. Were you allowed any flowers or disposable camera
5. How many guests were allowed to be there
6. What was the process to get the marriage license
7. What were the costs you had to pay
8. What were the two of you allowed to wear
9. Were you allowed to bring a wedding band in for him or did it have to be mailed and what was the value limit

This project can’t be successful without YOUR help! Just imagine a member wanting to get married and having all the information they need right at their fingertips here on PTO...thanks to YOU!

I know the approval process can be lengthy, but what is the shortest amount of time that you have heard of? Also, if the bride-to-be lives out of state, how do they go about counseling? (phone?).

Most of what Kris posted was right on, but each individual prison is different, and they have different rules... Just thought I would throw that in there!

NC does not have conjugal visits . So far heres what I have come up with . You must mail the chaplain of the prison and request a marriage packet . You have to provide your own minister . They are done on fridays . He is allows one person ...non inmate and I am allowed one person non inmate . Thats as far as I have gotten so far . I mailed off for the packet two weeks ago and have not heard a single word yet . JB is checking into it this week . I will let you know more then . Thats also pender CI rules ...I think they do differ from prison to prison

Does anyone know about getting married to someone who is currently in a Detention Center. I'm not really sure how long he's going to be there.

Default Awww.

Awww come on. Tell us what the newlywed package is!! Do you know if it's the same all over NC because my baby is in Cumberland County Detention Center and we're anticipating a Raleigh Prison maybe. I'm really not sure. I know it won't be where you guys are at. Do you know if the same rules apply in another minimum security? If not do you maybe know where I could find this information out, because I honestly don't even know where to start.

We were married 01/24/08 at Maury Correctional Institution (close custody).

1. Did you have any counsling
Yes. Our minister performed 1 counseling session during regular visiting hours. The prison required a minimum of 3 sessions.

2. How long did the whole process take

14 Weeks

3. Did you have to find your own minister
Yes. Most chaplains in NC do not perform the ceremonies.

4. Were you allowed any flowers or disposable camera
Flowers, yes. Cameras of ANY kind, no.

5. How many guests were allowed to be there
We had 2 but were allowed 4.

6. What was the process to get the marriage license
Obtain affidavit for him to sign and have notarized. Take my birth certificate and social security card and his social security card to the Register of Deeds along with the affidavit.

7. What were the costs you had to pay

$50 for the marriage license and $250 for the minister.

8. What were the two of you allowed to wear
I wore a wedding gown (no train) and he was not allowed to change.

9. Were you allowed to bring a wedding band in for him or did it have to be mailed and what was the value limit
He was allowed a wedding band on our wedding day with a value of no more than $100.

Hey Rhondas - as far as I know - in most any prison or any case of prison weddings.. the first step is to ask your significant other to go to the Chaplain and request a marriage packet. He/She should receive instructions on where to go from there and he/she can relay that information to you! In my case, my first step was to write a letter of intent to the Chaplain about why I wanted to marry my fiance.... and I am waiting on a list of questions now from the Chaplain. Best of luck to you and if you need more info - I will try to help, but I am just getting started as well. I've received a good bit of advice and info from some GREAT ladies here at PTO though!

Ms, the best thing to do is have Chris ask the chaplain for a marriage packet. Or you may want to ask him the name of the chaplain and you call him and ask him the process. Not every prison has a marriage packet, but most do. Either way, talking to the chaplain is where to begin. Good luck hun!

Hey =)
He is scheduled to meet with the chaplain in the next couple of days. His case mgr informed him that there IS a packet and a packet will be sent to me as well. My pastor (@ my church) offered to marry us at no charge. That is a true blessing!
