Wow, really? PB is known to house the worst criminals with half of their prison being in the SHU. Have you heard any updates?

No matter what peoples thoughts on the SHU. It is a necessary thing that is needed in a prison environment. Yes solitary confinement for long periods of time can be very damaging to the mind. My prison we generally do not house persons individually for any length of time. A few days at the most and this is really mainly because of bed rotations and luck of the draw.

But SHUs are needed when inmates can not be controlled by staff and are a disruption on the compound and it is also used when Inmates need to be protected from other inmates for various reasons.

I never heard that CDC was shutting down a SHU. They do sometimes move SHU inmates to other facilities and flip a yard from a SHU to a regular yard.

I agree that they are necessary and if they were routinely used as your experience has been I don't think we'd bat an eyelash. It's the indeterminate use that leaves folks for years (ever met someone who spent 15+ in solitary? it's an experience) that is unacceptable.
