Arrow For the Record: Jail Overcrowding in Alabama

Did anyone else catch this episode of "For the Record" where they interviewed Vernon Barnett about the overcrowding problem? He really just kinda danced around the issue, but I thought it was interesting anyways, and any kind of media publicity is good. You can watch the episode online on their website:

http://www.aptv.org/VideoRoom/viewpr...asp?FileID=371

Episode description:

"Jail Overcrowding:
The Alabama Department of Corrections is racing to relieve overcrowding in the state’s prison system as a judge continues to look at a suit from counties upset about the number of state inmates in their jails. The department is also in transition with a new commissioner. Vernon Barnett, Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections will discuss the changes and take viewer questions when they call 1-866-552-0025. "

I hope as Mr. Barnett said that they do take a real close look at the non- violent inmates which are housed in the prisons and start releasing those who do not belong in prison such as technical violators. It is an out rage that they are being give 14 or 15 year sentences for such things and I think that needs to be the first step taken to reduce prison overcrowding.

The thing is though tha this has been their strategy for the past 5-10 years, and it hasn't helped ease overcrowding in the LEAST.. the inmate population has risen! If it's broke, FIX IT!

My husband is at Kilby on a technical violation of parole. When he lost his job & then we lost our home he was scared to get sent back for non-payment of fines. Then I got diagnosed with cancer & we went to California. I have a petition that I am trying to get signatures for. If you are interested in signing it, please go to:
