Default Difference between "violation" sentence to a halfway house?

Is there a difference in the treatment and liberties if you are "violated" and sentenced to 6-months in the 1/2 way house or coming straight from prison?

Default

Are they going to the half way house after prison or instead of prison? Usually a half way house is used when you are just getting out of prison. The system places a person there to help them adjust to the outside world again before actually going outside.

I can tell you from personal experience that I got 6 months in a HWH for a violation of probation and I am not allowed ANY privileges such as furloughs etc...

I am allowed to continue to work for my employer and goto continue with college...thats it.

Default Purpose of Half Way House

Towards the end of a prison term, a person may be eligible to be transferred to a half way house to assist them in preparing for release (find a job, attend counseling if needed, eventually have over night social passes with family, etc.)

The other purpose of the halfway house is to be used as a gradual sanction for those on probation/supervised release as opposed to having their supervision revoked. Since it's a sanction, one doesn't have the same privileges as those coming from the prison.

I have to reply again now that I have been in the HWH for almost 2 weeks. From what I can see...the Probation violations AND the people who have been sentenced to the HWH get quite a bit a preferential treatment compared to those "clients" as I call them who came from prison.

But according to the official rule book...it is supposed to all be the same. I can tell you one thing...EVERY inmate in my HWH who just did a bid in a Federal Prison HATES the HWH compared to the prisons. The running joke is "Welcome to USP Toler House". The employees at these HWH's in NJ are getting $10/hr and have no experience in law enforcement at all.

Again...only speaking for Toler House/Logan Hall in NJ

Default Violation to HWH compared to release from closed custody

The person released from prison to a HWH is under jurisdiction of the BOP. Therefore, while a probation officer may have input, they do not make the final decision as to passes and other things. The case manager has that authority.

For someone sent to the HWH as a violation, they remain under the jurisdiction of the Probation Office and therefore, the probation officer makes the ultimate decision regarding passes and other things.
