Unhappy Very sad

My son, who has severe mental illness, is going to be incarcerated sometime in the next few weeks. He is terrified, I am sad and scared for him.

Welcome to Prison Talk. I'm sorry for what your Son, and you are facing. Prison is terrifying for everyone the first time, but even more so with his mental illness. It will be the most difficult when he first arrives at prison, but it should improve quickly as he becomes more familiar with his actual circumstances.

How he acts, inmate etiquette, makes a big difference in how he is received by both the other prisoners and by the prison staff. Here is a link to a PTO thread on the subject
http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=592193

and you can also do a google search for "inmate etiquette"

Learn all you can about the treatment that is available at his prison system. Also reach out to local mental health organizations and the ACLU to understand the care the law says he should receive.

I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this. My son was imprisoned 2 years ago as well and has dx of schizophrenia. Please ready my posts and some maybe helpful to you. it is devastating to see them suffer in prison while our hands are tied. My best advice is to never lose faith and trust that God will see you and your son through this. Also, make sure you are constantly on top of all his care while he is there.

prayers your way

You need to make sure that you have all the legal papers signed by your son so you can be contacted if/when his mental or physical health is in jeopardy. HIPAA, psychiatric advance directive, etc. And a full copy of doctor's and therapists records, on his past treatments/medications. If it's a couple of weeks, you may have time to wean him off his current medication to something that is available through the prison formulary (his doctors may be able to help you with such things).
