I thought of this thread while watching that A&E special about Scott Petersen. The detective said that on the night his wife went missing one of the officers set a drink on the table and Scott immediately put a coaster under it. The detective said that it was a strange thing for him to think about under the circumstances.

For me, it would be so automatic and would not require any thought. I would be really uneasy until the coaster was there. I do this all day every day. Things make me uncomfortable and I fix them. There is no thought involved. Rationally, I know that these little things don't bother other people so if I want things a certain way I do it myself. Not expressing any opinion about Petersen, but I realized that the detective taking that coaster thing as a sign of his guilt showed a lack of understanding of people with OCD.

I don't find anything about Peterson that describes him as OCD. I do have an alternate possibility - it's a way to manifest control in a situation - correcting someone gives you the upper hand.

Possible?

Maybe, but OCD isn't necessarily extreme in everyone. Some have just a few things that really need to be a certain way and others are like that about everything. I don't know if Scott Petersen is OCD or not, but the detective considering him using a coaster as a sign of guilt is a little scary. Everybody, clinically OCD or not, has certain automatic habits that don't just turn off because there is a crisis. He either just killed his wife or he just found out that she was missing and could be in danger. Either way using a coaster should not be a priority. The fact that he did shouldn't be seen as evidence one way or the other. It was unlikely a deliberate act.

I understand your point of view, but having spent a great deal more time with narcissists than I wish I had, I see it as a potential "how uncouth you are - any civilized person would use this coaster; see, I fixed it for you". It's as automatic for a narcissist to try for the upper hand as it is for an OCD to fix the order of things. In which case, it's definitely a clue to his narcissism.

I'm laughing, because I'm finding out that there's a lot of OCD around, but I (almost) never run into that! Narcissists, yes, OCD, no.

OMG I do this too! When they're on sale I try to keep 4-5 bottles of everything in stock. I can go months without having to buy detergent or cleaning products because I don't like it being "dirty". I feel so normal now

I sort my M&Ms by color before I eat them. Cracks my co-worker up every time. All lined up on my desk. Then I eat the color with the most till I get even numbered piles and then eat one color at a time till they are gone.

I separate skittles and eat them by color....yellow or purple are last as they are my favorite.
