Unhappy Attica-Bad first time visiting experience (and more info on visiting).

I had an unpleasant experience at Attica yesterday. It was my first visit since he was transferred there, and up until this point I have only had great experiences at the other facilites he has been in. Here's the story: He was put in "the box" the day before our visit, so we had to visit in the reception area. When I got there the lady CO said this to me: "Get all the food you want from the vending machine and use the bathroom and then sit in the visiting area, you will be locked in and I will come check from time to time if anyone needs to use the bathroom, but dont come up to the gate all the time asking to go because we don't have time for that." First of all there was no food in the vending machines. There was a machine for hot food, but it was shut down and there was nothing in it, so all we had to choose from was chips, cookies and candy bars. Then they had a can soda machine and a hot drink machine. When we finally started our visit there were four inmates all together in this area and about 7 visitors including myself. NO ONE came to check to see if we needed to used the restroom until about an hour and a half later. Even though there were two CO's sitting right there in eye's view eating thier food and smoking cigarettes in the building. My man said he needed to use the bathroom really really bad, and so did I. So I got up and tried to get thier attention after he begged and pleaded with me to do so. They both saw me but didnt say or do anything. So I sat back down and about 15 minutes later she came to unlock the door. I told her my man needed to use the restroom and she said she would call for someone to come down and escort him. About 20 minutes later there was still no one. He was very very uncomfortable and after arguing with him for awhile I gave in and got him some cups to go pee in and then had to dispose of them in the garbage. Luckly the door was still open for the vistors and the nice woman next to us offered to leave for a min to give him privacy. They finally did have two CO's come down, but then they "couldnt find the key" to open the area to get him to the restroom, so that took about another 15-20 minutes. Luckily he was at least somewhat relieved at this point. Then the vistor door was locked again (This was around 12:30) and no one again came for a long time to check on us visitors. There was an elderly lady visiting her son and she got up to tell them she needed to go (This was around 2:00) The woman refused to open the gate and told the woman she needed to WAIT ANOTHER 20 MINUTES for her to come over and unlock the gate. The elderly woman was very upset and asked the CO to bring her supervisor down, which she didnt, but she ended up opening the gate a little quicker, about 10 mintues later instead of 20. I cried before I left, all the emotions of having to leave, plus all the ignorace of some of the staff really got to me. My question is.. how the hell can they lock US in and refuse US VISITORS bathroom rights?? There should be no reason to lock us in. There were 1 to 2 CO's right there at all times throughout the visit... like I said they were just eating and smoking (I guess they dont know about NYS's clean air policy) Should I file some kind of complaint? And if I do, who should I be contacting? (I haven't had to file not even one in the past few years so I wouldnt even know where to begin) OR, should I just leave it alone? Thanks for listening everyone!

I also would like take some time to explain the visiting process a little more, because it's kind of unecessisarily confusing and I did find some info on here, but thought I could provide a little more info for first time visitors that I didnt know when I went, especially with visiting inmates who are in "the box":

I arrived about 6:45 on a Saturday and there were about 6 cars already lined up when I got there. They line up at the first gate. Around 7:15 someone came and unlocked the gate but we all still had to wait and around 5-10 minutes later a girl came around and passed out numbers on post-it notes. Once you get your number you can either leave and come back later (If you do leave, you should come back around 8:30 because they start processing at 8:45) or you can pull into the visitor parking (which I opted to do since I don't know the town very well). Buses got there around 7:30, I don't know if thats the time they come every week, but I was sure glad I made it before them because there were two. Around 7:45 a van came around and picked up the visitors waiting in their cars and took them to the vistor center around the corner. Once you get into visitor center, if you already have a number give them your sticky note that they gave you and they have the slips to fill out in a seperate area with the numbers they already passed out. No one explained this to me and at first I ended up taking a different slip with the #26 on it, which would have sucked for me because they gave me #11 when I was at my car. Also, you cannot have a locker if you drove your own car there. Only people who come in on buses can get a locker. So if you drove, leave all of your items in the car before you get picked up at the vistor center. Only bring ID, money, keys and whatever else is allowable into the facility. They will also stop back by the cars before proccessing so if there is something you really need you can bring it to the vistor center. They pass out locker keys around 8:30 and start proccessing around 8:45. They usually call #'s in increments of 5 - 1-5, 5-10... etc. Even though I was #11, I didnt get called until about 9:20 because it seemed to be going a little slow that day. Once they call your number they give you back your white slip and you get into the van to go to the processing area (which again is not that far away). Once you get in there you show them your white slip and your ID and then you sit on the benches and wait for the inmate's last name to be called. If you indicated on your white slip that you either have money or a package for the inmate they will call his last name for you to come up and take care of it before you continue processing. I didnt have either, so I waited and the CO at the metal detector called his last name for me to come up.. like any other NYS prison, you take off all metal, and shoes and jacket and walk through and then they instruct you to go to the next building. They will stamp your hand before you go on to the next building. Now, they should tell you if you are in the regular visiting or reception because they are two different buildings, but they didnt tell me anything so I went to the wrong building. If you dont know, ask. If you are going to be in the regular visiting area you will walk outside and straight ahead to the next building. If he is in "the box" (solitary) then your visit will be in the reception area which you will have to walk to the left and pass the little shack and go through the gate to the reception area. You will sign in and then be instructed where to sit. If you are in reception there are 6 places for visiting and you sit at the next available spot. As I mentioned before the food was very poor and they lock you into the visiting area. You will visit your loved through a cage and there are holes at the bottom to pass food and hold hands. He is also locked into his area as well. I have done visiting through a cage at another facility and I preferred Attica because I felt like I could seem him better. They cut the visit short at around 2:40, so be prepared for that, I dont know if its just because we were in reception or if thats what they do in the normal visiting room as well. When you leave you go back into the building with the metal detector and show your hand stamp under the UV light and you can leave after that. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me.

Thanks for the exytra information about "box" visiting. I think my husband will not be getting visits for his "box" time as it sounds so awful.

I have visited in the regular visiting room, and found it to be alot better than the things that you have described. Only been there twice, and will never go back, but the experience wasn't bad.

So they locked you in and couldn't locate the key. That is scary. What happens if there was an emergency? Does your man want you to file a complaint?

Sorry your visit want pleasant.

Having beem visiting at Attica since December 2006, I don't think that box visits are like this, or at least not any more. Box visits appear to be in the regular visiting room. Non contact visits are in the back of the room, where the inmate is "caged."
