Default Hello from PA

My 21 year old son has been sentenced to 4-10 years. It is a really unfair sentence (but that's another story). He's been in jail for 17 months. It took a year just to get the trial stuff over with and they didn't even give him time served so he's only about 6 months into his sentence. They sent him to Camp Hill, PA for classification and testing. It was difficult visiting every week because it's two hours each way driving. We figured it would just be for a few months until they sent him to his final placement. Yesterday we found out that they transferred him to Albion which is on the opposite side of the state. 330 miles each way. How can they claim to think it's important for these guys to have visitors and then take them to the furthest possible place in the state. Does anyone know how you go about getting someone transferred closer to home? I will do whatever I can to help him get through this. We're planning to visit every two or three weeks, we just have to figure out the logistics of it since every visit will have to be an overnight trip. If anyone knows about transferring or why they would do this, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks

Welcome jleach...to the family....that you didn't know you had. I am really sorry to hear your story and the heartbreaks it entails. PA sounds a lot like the fed system..."far away" is the norm. GGGRRRR
I think you will find your answers to the transfer questions in the PA Thread...you can go to US REGIONAL forum and scroll down until you get to PA...and then ask your questions ... and I'm sure the PA people will have the answers.
THEN, I want you to come back here to the parents forum...and join us!! You will find so much support..understanding, compassion, encouragement, love, hope and prayers....no judgements what-so-ever.
This is a really safe place to pour your heart out...or vent, rant, cry, and even laugh at times.
We all know about the rediculously long unfail sentences...and we don't like them at all!!!
We will be here waiting for you to come back and jump in.
Love and prayers,
XXOO

Welcome to the parents forum. I'm sure your son needs to file a grievance form or something in order to be moved closer. That's the way it is here in OH at least, it used to be if the inmate didn't get a visit for 6 months then he could be transferred but they changed that a few years back. This is a good place to come and ask questions, get support, vent and heal a broken heart, I hope you find the answers you need.

Chapter One - The Phone Call

For most people "the phone call" is an ominous phrase, for us it meant that we heard the words "Mom, I'm in Jail". Have you ever felt the world stop? Dead in its orbit? And make the ground come up so quickly that you don't know what hit you? Welcome to our world.

I do think that going to the state thread will help about finding out about the move. Sometimes they don't put them near home in the beginning to keep them away from the people that they got in trouble with. My son is hours away and it is hard to go too often - -we go about every 6 weeks. it's hard, but you can do it. I hope you will find something out about the move -- but he may need to stay where he is for a year before he can ask to be moved.

I am in PA and I know where Albion is. I do know that when my son was in prison..he was sent to the prison closest to me, because I had custody of his son. If your son has a child, they do make sure they are close so the child can be brought to see their dad.

My son was in Albion before he was in camp hill and he said Albion is better than being in camp hill. Albion is the intake prison for the western side of the state.

Guess this is where I need to be. My son has been in SCI Camp Hill for 5 years now and I truely with I would have found this long ago. He was sentenced 5 to 15 and has been paroled but are not having any success with his approved home plan. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I am rather frustrated with PA's justice system, parole regulations and more right now.

I am in AZ, but grew up in PA. Welcome!!! Here my son could have gotten a transfer. He was the only guy who could communicate with the CO on a job. There was trouble a few times and he was asked "What do you want?" He said he did not want the transfer he put in for instead he wanted to be on the fire crew. He had to work for it, but got the chance to. If he stays ticketless it will be more of a hope to get closer. For us getting closer to home ment a pretty awful place for him. I am glad to travel further and I know you too if it is a safer prison. My son was in four places in a few years including intake! Hope they get closer and stay safe!!!
