Default Tablets for inmates in Texas Prisons?

I have been reading on the TIFA Facebook page about the possibility of tablets being available to inmates. Supposedly Eric Johnson said it will play movies, music, books and can be used for classes. It's supposed to be in the approval process at this time. Does anyone have any other information or can you verify that this is actually a possibility>

Approval process can be a few years on some things...by the time a draft policy makes it around to each of the respective offices, it rarely looks the same as it did in the beginning. TDCJ will only do this IF they can figure out a manner to do it that does not require the hiring of ANY additional staff. After all, look at the way they just eliminated a lot of clerical positions from the hiring boards...the agency is being told to prepare for large cuts in their budget.

While there may be some money to be made on tablets, it is not as simple as just shipping cases of them to the commissary. You have to have someone monitoring content and you have to have multiple people to perform that function...and if it costs so much as a $20K clerk, don't expect to see it anytime soon.

They have tablets in Ft Worth at the county jails. I don't know about other counties in the state, maybe so, but I can't say. Music, games, sending/receiving info to do with jail or medical issues, I think sending/receiving emails on an approved list or something of that sort and....I don't know what else. They keep 4 or 5 tablets in each pod or tank . If you're indigent they don't hold as much importance. Along with that, people invariably want to hog them and that causes problems for everyone else. During count time if the tablets are not put back in the chargers situated in the day rooms the entire pod/tank is put on lockdown until further notice. And so like all new improvements or additions to any penal system, where there's good there's bad.

In other states prisoners get them through Jpay purchased by a loved one. They aren't cheap. They can watch movies, play games, listen to music. They go to a kiosk type thing and sync it and the emails download to the tablet. They can reply, then sync it back and the emails get sent. My friends sister had one in Kansas and she loved it but it also broke a lot and tech service as you can imagine is non existent.

Plus TDCJ won't do much unless it's going to make them money anyway
