Default Need Info on Michigan Region 1 West Facilities!

Hello all! I am working on updating the Region 1 West Prison Profiles so any information you can give me on that would be greatly appreciated. You can either PM me with the info or post it here. I thank you in advance for your help.

List of Region 1 West Facilities;

Alger Maximum Correctional Facility

Baraga Maxiumum Correctional Facility and Level I

Camp Cusino

Camp Kitwen

Camp Manistique

Marquette Branch Prisons

Ojibway Correctional Facility

Camp Ottawa

Info I'm looking for;
Visiting Hours/Days for each Level in the facility.
Motels/Hotels near the prison
Visiting room rules
Just anything that you can think of that will help others looking for information on that facility.
Again I Thank You!

Baraga Level I

Visits are 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. everyday, except Monday, unless it's a state holiday. Many of the CO's did not know that you could visit on Monday when it was a holiday, but you can.

The guys are shuttled over for visits. You have to be there by 5:00 to have the visit start right at 5:30.

The vending machines are in the lobby - no hot food, only snacks (junk), pop and coffee. You have to get all your food before you go into the visit. The CO takes the snacks out of the vending machine and puts them in a clear plastic bag for you. The visitors are not allowed to handle the snacks before entering the visiting room.

All visitors (usually not many) are taken back at the same time. After going through the metal detector, there's a room on the left where everyone gets patted down, socks & shoes off. Then, back by the metal detector to get the hand stamp and through the door on the right side and into the visiting room.

There's some coloring books and toys for kids. No playing cards because the level I visits occur in the level V visiting room cards are not allowed.

There's a small visiting room that holds about 15 people. Once in a while, it gets busy and the big room that holds about 30 people is used.

The guys have to buy the picture tickets in advance (when they put in their regular store order). It's a 35 mm camera so they get the pictures too when they get developed. I believe they pay $2.50 for the picture tickets.

The restrooms are in the lobby. If you use the restroom, you go through the whole process again to go back in the visiting room.

With the visits starting late, there's lots of time to kill before visits, if you stay over night. There's a casino with a bowling alley less than 5 minutes away. There's a nice park by the bay in L'Anse and lots of parks and waterfalls close by. The Bonds Falls are about 45 minutes away, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL definitely worth seeing.

The casino has a hotel (little pricey) and there's a hotel right across the street (use to be Super8, but casino bought it). There's a Best Western near by (little pricey). The L'Anse Motel is about 15 minutes before the facility. It's nothing special, but it's clean, reasonable and if you ask the guy will let you have a late check out (tip from Stacey'sWar) which really comes in handy in the winter. Just next to the L'Anse Motel is the Hilltop Restaurant they have huge cinnamon rolls. I brought one home for me and the kids and it lasted for days.

Do be careful if you are alone. I stopped at a nice scenic rest area and was reading a magazine killing time and had a stranger approach me. Luckily, I had a carpooler that was napping in the car.

Puglsey Visiting Hours Are 2:30-830 During The Week And They Start Processing At 2pm ..10am Till 800 During Weekend. Vending Machines And Phototickets Are 2.50 Inside The Visiting Room. Everyone Seems Nice. Inmate Can Walk Around Up To The Vending Machine As Long As They Stay Behind Red Line.. Can Walk You To The Door As Long As No One Spoils It For Others By Getting Freaky. They Dont Have To Wait An Hour Till Count Is Over To Come Up And Visit..one Of The Very Few Facilities That Allow This.

Camp Ottawa

Visits are Saturday and Sunda and State holidays from 2:20pm to 8pm
They are an hour behind lower Michigan.

Visiting room is small

You can recieve a gate pass or if not you can apply for the saw mill were you make $80 a month. There is a three month waiting list though.

Count is every hour, weight pit has dirt floors, they are housing in the day rooms because they are overcrowded by about 50 men.

Mail is sent directly to Camp ottawa but money orders must be sent to Ojibway
and in care of inmate accountent

Once I find out more I will post

Ojibway Correctional Facility

Visiting hours are Mon-Fri 2:30pm-8:30pm, Sat and Sun 9am-7pm. They have count at 9:30am, so if you don't get there by 9am on the weekend days, you might be pushing it and have to wait 'til after count to get processed.

The visiting room is relatively small. it's been "busy" each time i've been to visit (like 5-6 guys on a visit) and the room was full.

Photo tickets are $3.00 and you pay for them at the front desk. You have to have exact change for the tickets. They use a 35mm camera so you don't get your photos that day... you have to wait 'til the roll is finished (which is ridiculous, especially with the price of the photos). You do get two copies of the photos, though, so my baby sent me a copy and kept a copy.

They have the vending machines with sandwiches and stuff in them but they must fill them on Mondays (which is silly) because everytime i've come up, they're half empty when i visit on Friday, and by Sunday there's almost nothing in there he likes. It would make sense to fill them on Thursdays just before the weekend traffic, which i'm sure is their busiest time because they're so far away for most people. What most people do is get their food first thing before getting settled into the visit because the good stuff goes fast, and if you wait 'til he's hungry, there may not be anything in there.

when you're being searched, they make ladies go behind this screen to lift up your bra so that they can see if anything falls out i guess.

ojibway is very remote. it is literally in the middle of nowhere. there isn't a hotel anywhere nearby. the closest hotels i've found were a 45 minute drive from the facility. i've stayed at two different hotels. a super 8 about 45 minutes north of ojibway, and a hotel/casino called Dancing Eagles which was about 45 minutes south of ojibway. i preferred the casino because they give you a $10 cash voucher and a $5 gas voucher each day of your stay. So i used my $10 towards my visit each day, and my carpooler and i put our gas vouchers together to fill up the tank to offset the gas used just getting back and forth to the facility.

most of the COs i interacted with were cool but they are super slow when it comes to processing visits.

if anybody has any questions about Ojibway, just PM me.

Camp Ottawa visit times are 8:30am to 2:30 PM sorry bout the wrong times in the previece post.

Vists are very relaxed, bathrooms in the visit room

Vending machines are snacks and pop only so eat a good breakfast

They dont really care how oftan you use the restroom and inmates can usually get by with two without using another visit.
