Default Son on his way to Baraga Level 1

Good afternoon all...
I have read EVERY post on baraga..all the info is 5+ years old, tho I am scared nothing has changed..Has it? Is it as AWEFUL as it sounds? Does anyone currently have a LO in Level 1 there? They could NOT have sent him any farther from home..It is 8 hours one way, and I understand only allowed a 3 hour visit? Is this just a depot before they head out elsewhere? (praying)
Thank you to anyone who has the time to respond

My daughter's bf has been at Baraga about a month now. He tells me the exercise yard is very small and there is no programing other than GED completion and a small leader dog training program. 120 men are in each unit. Cells are divided only by 3 foot high cinder block walls so theft and noise are issues. According to him, they have been having count almost hourly so they are required to be on their bunks throughout much of the day. Everytime I have talked to him, there has been a lot of noise in the background.
Visitation is ONLY on the weekdays and is 4 hours in the afternoon/evening, problematic for those traveling a distance to see their LO. He is also from the Detroit area.
I lived in the U.P. for many years. The driving, once past the bridge is very scenic and pleasant in the summer, fall and spring. It can be brutal and dangerous in the winter, even though snow removal is a big priority. The drive is closer to ten, rather than 8 hours from the Detroit area. There are low cost motels and campgrounds nearby.
I really can't tell you much more. He's been reading a lot, says there is really not much else to do.

baraga level 1 is very small , nothing there to offer either . level 1 prisoners are treated pretty much like the level 5 when it comes to visiting , (it sucks) went there and visited 4 days in a row , each day there were different rules . no one knew what they were talking about . only reason level 1's are here with the level 5's are to be their maids and cooks so they don't have to pay people to come in to do it , this place offers NOTHING !!!! GED classes hahahaha your lucky to even see the instructor of the class , they don't even show up !!!

I don't know about it being card or monies up there. The amount of monies
that can be taken is $25 for one person, $50 for two and no more than a
total of $60 if more than 2 visitors at a time.

I made the trek up last week..Its 8 hours one way from my place in White Lake.Gorgeous drive! The prison itself sits maybe a mile at MOST from Lake Superior. VERY small town, very nice people. The guards were very nice to me, and I have no plans on EVER giving them a reason NOT to be. I was the only visitor both days I was there. You sign in, and they go get him. As they are doing that, you can purchase snacks from the vending machines. $25 limit for 1 person, dont know how much for a group. (I know it took quarters, I THINK $1 bills also) 1 soda/drinks machine...1 Coffee machine..1 snacks machine..ALL junk food, no "real" food. You also purchase your photo tickets from that machine. 2 pics for $1.50 A female guard came in to "search" me..Nothing extreme, pat down, in your mouth, behind your hair, bottoms of feet. Just doing their job. Small clean room, low tables, two chairs. A hug at the beginning, hug at the end. A guard is there at all times of course. No problem with that. Very clean place. He tells me they treat him decent. I cant ask for much more..
Theres a hotel right on the lake, almost directly across from Wadaga Rd..I stayed at the casino..Its small, but nice, reasonably priced. GOOD food at their restaurant. Also an A&W style drive in right at the beginning of Wadaga Rd. A petting zoo a couple miles down, Bishop Baraga Shrine a couple miles down the other way (OMG their home made ice cream is AMAZING!!) A beautiful place for a trip..Darn shame I was there for the reason I was.

I hope this helps someone..I am happy to answer anything I can.
