Yeah, it appears to be a hellhole for you guys on the inside. I'm just trying to get him to make the best of it...it isn't like he has a choice on it! LOL Except sometimes I think he thinks he does! I just keep telling him to keep his nose clean! He has been there since June 08...I figure he won't come away from there until next summer at the earliest... I do have to admit though the guards I encountered when I visited in July were the nicest MDOC guards I've dealt with thus far.

Question Michael Johnson Videos???

Mike called this morning to tell me he is picking up a new class in addition to his Phase 2 and his two AA meetings. It is watching Michael Johnson videos regarding alcohol and drug abuse. He said he gets a certificate upon completion for his file and to be shown to the parole board. It meetings every Saturday and Sunday for up to 6 weeks. There are 12 videos to watch. He said it is being "taught" by the same gentlemen who runs the AA groups. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there another name for this "class" than "Michael Johnson Videos"?

For those of you who are like me...Michael Johnson is a motivational speaker. That's all I know.

Would that complete his phase I then? He is in phase II and I assumed he by passed phase I due to his level of addiction/alcoholism.

Really? I"m sorry they were so horrible. Mike hasn't expressed they have been horrible yet. He has nicknamed COs at Egeler & Cooper St., but not here yet and this is the longest place he has been. Now don't get me wrong...he is not a fan of Massey and he isn't a fan of the woman that made me wash my perfume off at visitation, but he seems to be okay with "Ike" and "Miss P." now too...

Yeah...he has a grievence filed against massey and he won't pull it. Massey put a highly inappropriate song on over the PA system one Sunday morning and a whole bunch of guys filed grievences. They've gotten a lot of them to go away, but my guy just won't pull his yet or sign off or whatever it is they do to make it go away. He said Ms. P always tells him it is her job to give him his first MDCO ticket, laughs and walks away when he tells her she isn't going to get him... I'll have to ask him about this other CO you speak of... Have a good day scotty!

long story short here but Massey put a peice of sandpaper in my locker in order to set me up and get me put in the hole for a couple weeks. I got found not guilty because the hearings officer knew he was foul enought to to it.

tell your man to watch his back on this one because once Massey has you in his radar..... you have problems

good luck

I'm sorry Massey did that to you. That is just wrong.

I'm still waiting to hear from my guy to ask him about the one CO you spoke of. I've already told him to watch his back with Massey. Since there were so many grievances filed that day I think it would be hard for Massey to keep track of them all... But I'm just hoping and praying.

Now I'm a bit nervous because I haven't gotten the mail he sent over a week ago and I haven't heard from him yesterday or yet today. My guy never misses calls on the weekend... I'm wondering if he was moved.......I would love it if he was moved down below the bridge or even to the East side of the U.P. and I'm hoping that is all it is. I'm trying not to think of worse things.

Mike is better now. Ran to medical and stuck with an IV! :yikes: But he is able to keep things down and sounds like a new man this week! Thank you everyone for your thoughts and worries and prayers...

He sent me my previous post back and I got it. I'll be reposting it soon. I know you all can't wait!

Mike just called about another job...a painter. Making $12 more a month than he is now. He said it moves him up on his sheet to skilled. I haven't heard of anyone being a painter... I hope this is a positive thing. Any opinions or input?

Default My Lovely Visit to Baraga (Reposted)

On July 24, 2008 I left Dearborn, MI to travel to Baraga to see my guy. I left at 3:15pm and stopped 7 times (I had to go to the outlet stores for my new purse, plus get a Starbucks, because I had this feeling that I wouldn't be able to get one once I crossed over the "up north" line!). I arrived at my motel at 1:15am. So 10 hours! Let me give as much info as I can (maybe a little too much...sorry) so we have some updated information for others if they want to travel up that way! Of course I picked one of the busiest weekends to go, go figure, because there was a Pow-Wow taking place! I never saw it but heard a lot of the locals talking about it. I just wasn't interested in it since I was by myself!

I had booked a room at the Hilltop Motel, but a co-worker told me I might want to see if I could find another one...her in-laws are from the area and they said the Hilltop is pretty bare bones. I lucked out and booked the Motel like almost next door! It was the L'Anse Motel & Suites for $35/night. It was cute on the inside. There was a lazy-boy type chair, a wooden desk and chair, the bed, colored cable TV, a personal air conditioner/heater that I could control, a place to hang up clothes (but that wasn't hidden in the alcove like it has been in other hotels), the sink was in the room about 3 feet away from the bathroom door, and of course it had a bathtub/shower and a toilet (not an outhouse! LOL). It was clean and quite and cheap. Those were my requirements. I would definitely recommend this location to anyone making a trip up there. The only thing I would suggest though is that if you plan on leaving early in the morning, you might want to check out the night before because I had to beat on the owner's door at 9:25am to get him to open (he was suppose to open @ 9am & I thought he was suppose to open @ 8am...opps) the office so I could check out and get on the road! But the owner is very nice and pretty laid back. It is one of those cases that you get what you pay for, but it went above my expectations for $35/night. I refuse to pay top dollar for a room when I'm only going to be sleeping, studying and showering in there. But heads up...there are no refrigerators or microwaves in the single rooms. I think their "suites" have them but I'm not sure. (www.lansemotel.com)

As far as restaurants, I kept ending up at the same one in the AM. The Hilltop Restaurant (www.sweetroll.com). They have the biggest sweet rolls I've ever seen. I got one, brought it home and it is bigger than my son's face! Their breakfasts were huge, cheap and absolutely delicious! Their staff is super friendly and they have a little gift shop in the restaurant. I would usually head over there about 11am, take a book with me, eat and read. I was so full that I never even thought about food again until 9pm! The first day I ordered a fish sandwich (I was past the cut off time for their breakfast menu) and it was huge. When she brought it out, you could still hear it sizzling! The fries were delicious and hot too! The next 3 days I made the breakfast times...wonderful hashbrowns and biscuits and gravy! I'm hungry just thinking about it! And trust me when I tell you...I'm not even a breakfast food eater, but I could go for some of their's again right now! Yummy! The only bad thing was that they were closed by the time I was done with my visits.

My missteps...I don't know about y'all, but I can go to any local gas station and pick up a money order (which can be dropped off at the front desk when you go in for a visit). Well, not in Baraga, MI. People at the gas station thought I was a freak when I asked if they sold money orders and kept saying, "Well no, why would we?" I was directed to the local credit union~~save the trip, they won't sell you one if you aren't a member to their credit union (I tried the Co-Op angle being a member at another credit union...it didn't work). Just go straight to the little post office downtown and you can get one there. I was pretty frustrated at that point, but I got one none the less...

My trip was done on plastic (sorry...I know it isn't right, but such is life!), so make sure you ask places if they take plastic, because some of the local places do not accept plastic. I was really hungry for a slice of pizza by Saturday night but Irene's Pizza doesn't accept plastic, so I got a taco salad (I don't recommend it at all!). I finally gave in and would just stop by the Holiday Gas Station and pick up stuff to eat in my room after my visit...they had hot taquitos, mini-pizzas, a really good chicken salad sandwich and potato salad. I was tired of trying different places and it never tasting good (which includes the Subway and Burger King...I'm not sure why, but it didn't taste right to me...maybe it is just me) so I reverted back to what I knew...gas station food will allow you to survive, you have low expectations to start and they do take plastic! LOL

As for the visits (yes, the most important part!), they were wonderful. It is not busy at all! I went on Friday, luckily I drove around earlier in the afternoon to find the prison, because google maps didn't work out for me! The visits are from 4:00pm-8:30pm, Tuesday through Sunday (no visits on Mondays unless it is a holiday) for Level I. I arrived about 3:35pm Friday and explained to CO Eastman behind the desk I had never been to this location before. He was so friendly I was shocked! He explained everything in great detail to me as he walked me through the steps. Things got a little dicey because an attorney came in right after me to see his client who was a Level 5, so they got them set up first. (Same visiting room, but they were in a non-contact room and I could see the fellow prisoner and hear him talking to his attorney.)

There are 3 vending machines...one with pop and water, one with chips, candy, and assorted junk food and last was a coffee machine. You get the snacks after you sign in and before you go to the locker. The CO holds a clear plastic bag and puts everything in it for you, once you are done, they tie it up and set it tot he side at the frong desk. You put your sutff in the locker. Then you go in, get a very through pat-down (my ears were looked inside of, my shoes were undone so they could feel the straps, my shirt sleeves were unrolled, my hair had to be shook and fluffed and held up, my mouth was looked into, etc.), get your hand marked, and escorted into a small visiting room. There were 4 or 5 tables with 2 chairs at each to sit at. (It is like the size of the plane chairs area at Cooper St.)

The first day we had to sit across from one another at a table. There was another visit that took place that night with us (a man's ex-wife and their two girls), but the COs were super duper nice! The girls were sitting on dad's lap (they were probably like 8 & 10 years old), kissing on him, hugging on him, playing with him, running around, etc. The Cos only said every so often that dad's chair wasn't going to take much more so they would settle down for like 10 mins. The Cos would interact with you while you waited for them to bring the guys in...it was just really ladi back and a nice friendly atmosphere! The other visitors had forgotten to buy a picture ticket before coming in, so the CO called up front and CO Eastman brought a picture ticket in to her so dad could have a picture with his daughters done. I just thought that was so cool of the CO to get that ball rolling and not be all mean about it. When they escorted the Level 5 gentlement out after he was done, they had us all leave the room and go to where we came in at so they could put us behind a door...they even let Mike come with us to that point, which I thoguht was odd, but I liked it. So there stood Mike, me, the other inmate's ex-wife, two daughters and the female guard that did the pat downs. We were probably only about 20 mins into my visit at that point. When I left that night each CO asked me if I would be back the next day, told me to have a great night, that they would see me later, etc.

On Saturday I got there early...my only incident was when the female CO told me to wash off my perfume and hand lotion because she was choked-up by it (I found this odd because I had the same exact on the day before and she did the pat-down and was fine). I surmise that this was a "control" thing for her. I did what I was told...she was nice about it and wasn't rude...I just found it odd. So I pulled my "menstrating card" out at her after I washed up. Of course I did it at the front desk. She was more embarrassed than Eastman or I! (why is it whenever I go and visit him at a prison I'm on my period!?! LOL) As I was sitting in the waiting area to be taken back to be patted down and everything, every time a CO or another employee of some wort walked by me they would address me! I was so surprised. Every single person walking past would say hello, ask me how I was, etc. It was like I was human and they treated me as such!

Both Saturday and Sunday, the male CO in the room adjusted the tables for us, pulling it off to the side so the tables were staggered and putting the one chair on the side so you weren't directly across from one another! This way we could finally hold hands and touch! Which was very nice. But the female CO walked me in on Saturday and told me I had to sit at the very first table. The first 2.5-3 hours it was Mike, me and the CO in the room! Then another inmate's mother and sister came in to visit for the last 1.5-2 hours of visiting on Saturday and then came back on Sunday and visited from about 5pm-7pm. Other than that...it was just Mike and I.

You weren't getting away with any funny business...you were definitely watched the entire time, but they weren't rude to you or anything. The only time that someone called or said something to anyone in that room was the guy from the control room called because the sister wasn't sitting with the chair flat on the ground she was leaned up and the back of the chair was off the floor. That's it!

I was even a dork and forgot my cell phone in my purse, on and didn't realize until about 45 mins into our visit on Sunday (I think I was preoccupied with the thoughts of it being our last visit and whether I was going to be made to take another bath while I was there. ) and said something to the CO in the room, he made some calls, told me not to worry about it and laughed when I told him that if CO Eastman said that Britney Spears was talking to him that night, he wasn't lying...it was my ring tone. I thought the CO was going to pee his pants laughing so hard!

When you leave from your visits, you shouldn't poke around in the parking lot, because the guys can't be loaded up in the van until everyone's visting cars are out of the parking lot, because they come out into the parking lot area to get in the van. I was glad I knew this because Sunday night I wanted to get out of there pretty fast so I didn't cry in front of the COs or mike and if he wouldn't have told me that I would have sat in my car crying and making him worry as to what was wrong.

I drove home Monday, which only took me 8.5 hours~~no stopping for purses, but I did stop in St. Ignace and buy fudge at my son's name sake (give or take a letter or two in the spelling! LOL).

My other piece of advice would be...fill up before you cross the bridge from the L.P. into the U.P., especially if it is night time. I stopped to a gas station just outside of St. Ignace...well, actually the first one I came to outside of the city area and paid $4.36/gallon! :yikes: When I filled upin the L.P. on my way up I paid $3.85/gallon on Thursday! I almost feel over! Plus there was no restroom at this one, so I would just advise to take care of all of that stuff before crossing the brige if you are headed to Baraga, because the next big town is Marquette (I think) and that is a ways off! I definitely feel better about my next trip up (I'm hoping for September/October) because I'll know where I'm headed and what to expect! It is beautiful up there and I'm sure there was a ton I didn't see or do, but I don't do a lot when I'm alone...what's the point! LOL

I can't think of anything else and I'm sorry this post was so long, but it doesn't seem like the Baraga Max threads get a lot of action so I wanted to make sure I put it all out there! Plus it lets me relive my visit for a little while longer.

I was curious though until someone here set me straight as to what these pasties that are advertised all over the U.P. were because I know what I think pasties are and they have to do with wardrobe malfunctions...not with little mom and pop stands along the roads of the U.P.

I sure hope this post doesn't disappear because I'm not retyping it a 3rd time. LOL

Yeah, good idea! I think when I get home tonight I'm going to copy and paste it to my computer just in case...

Thanks...I'm very happy he is doing better and getting a better job, but he has irritated me both Saturday and Sunday telling me he'll call later and than doesn't. What's up with that?!? I think I have awfully high expectations and he is doing the best he can where he is and I just keep expecting more and more... I am anxious to get his next couple letters because he was "setting things straight" with me in them after he got my not so nice letters... I'm anxious to see how he "sets me straight"! LOL

Hope you enjoy your kiddies today!

Well, I didn't post here earlier but I hadn't heard from Mike since Monday morning, but he called me tonight right after my class. I had just gotten in my car. I was happy to hear his voice. He was very upbeat tonight! It was a nice conversation! He told me that he has been busy and knew he had to get to the phone tonight to call after my class or else I would be really concerned. He is doing Phase II, the Michael Johnson videos, a computer class, 2 AAs, church, training someone for his porter job (who knew that was a week long process) and waiting to start his new job! Plus reading all of the books I sent (of course) and writing me! He said when he is done with these classes he is done with all the classes they offer there at Baraga...then I'll start pushing to have him moved elsewhere!

Oh yeah I got my letter "setting me straight"...he cracks me up. LOL He just told me that what I heard wasn't what I thought and he understands that I don't get the whole "prison" life thing he is living through right now. He is just too cute sometimes because he called it my 'telling off letter' on the phone tonight and I just giggled! It wasn't even close, but if that is what he wants to qualify as a "telling off" I'm good with that!

Question Question

This may be the wrong place but i have a question. My brother is in prison, and for the past 6 months or so has been at Ojibway facility level 1, well not all of the suddent he was moved to Barage Max facility, level 5....Ok so my question is, what could he have possibly done to have gotten himself moved from a level 1 to a level 5? He doesnt tell us anything except for asking for money, so im trying to figure this out on my own. Thanks for any help.

Hi tabitha...I would think something happened that caused him to be moved from Level I to a Level V. You might want to post in the main forum asking a few people there too as this thread doesn't have much of an audience right now. But I would definitely think he received a major ticket/violation, but I'm not 100% sure. You might be able to request the information through a FOIA. I've heard of people submitting a FOIA to Lansing regarding their loved one's files/tickets/incidents, etc. Good luck. Sorry, I'm not much help... But welcome to the Baraga thread even though the circumstances may not be good as to why you are here...

Mike called today and reported that there were two cases of MRSA identified yesterday. I'm assuming at least one case was in Level I, because he was told to fill up the buckets and dispensers (or whatever they use) with 100% sanitizer instead of usually watering it down and he said they scoured the showers from top to bottom last night. I told him to walk around at all times with his little blue gloves on to be safe! We don't need that right now. I hope everyone is okay and gets better quickly! That is some nasty stuff....

the guy who Mike was training for his old job so he can do his new job...yeah, had MRSA. He is gone now! Rode out to be quarentined yesterday. Mike wasn't happy over that development and on top of that is now uber paranoid over whether he touched the guy or the same thing the guy did, etc...

So yesterday Mike called to tell me that his new RUM...

(who is separate from his ARUS???~~there is something very peculiar going on with his ARUS/Counselor as she was off for over a week and for the last 3 weeks when she does come to work she puts a sign up saying that she is not to be disturbed and doesn't want to see anyone...isn't that her job? I don't know what an ARUS is/does; or a RUM is/does or a Counselor (there) is or does. Mr. Lobster can you help me here...I'm getting confused! )

...is suppose to see him at 3pm per the CO and for Mike not to freak when he is called in. (HUH? Why would a CO tell him this...I found that strange.) Mike asked what about and the CO said about going to bootcamp. Well, he called this morning and he never got called in to see this guy yesterday but everyone who did see this guy yesterday discussed going to bootcamp with him. So Mike thinks he will be called in to talk on Monday.

I swear to god one more person tells him he is going to bootcamp I'm going to start slapping people! WTF? Let it go...he ain't going to bootcamp! Why do they keep bringing it up? I have the paperwork from the judge and the judge said "NO!" plus he is a VO that committed a crime on the not applicable list for SAI. I told him not to get his expectations up to get disappointed again. He said he isn't, but you know how it is...he probably is.

**This is a duplicate post from the Cooper St. Thread, but I am hoping for some feedback from mrlobster, so I thought I would put it there too!

I think my financial aid is enroute...it was released to school on 9/10. I get that check and watch out because I'm on my way up to the great U.P.! I think this trip might be a surprise this time though....
