Exclamation Can death row inmates be transferred to other prison? State?

Hi does anyone know if inmates on death row can be transferred to other states or prisons, or do they remain permanently in the state where there crime is committed?

I am unaware of ANY Compact transfer of a death row inmate. The closest to being housed in the custody of another agency was the period of time some years back where persons under a federal sentence of death were housed in the custody of the State where they committed their offense, transferring to federal custody only for the purpose of execution. I have heard of a person sentenced to death in both South Carolina and California that was in South Carolina. He feared execution in South Carolina, asked to be transferred to California- and his request was granted.

I don't think you have a choice where to go. Its not everyday that a person has multiple death sentences in different states.

You are right on that one. The instance that I listed was one specific case.

Exactly, and there would be a transfer back to South Carolina if they decided to set their date before California finally got around to it...

My guess is that the case had not been disposed of in California and the transfer was to complete those proceedings. But it is definitely a fact-specific matter if it occurred...
