Probably not but all phone calls are recorded by the prison and/or the company providing the phone service.

No. They are not able to obtain recording devices, period, from what I can tell.

I can't even (conveniently) record my own phone calls, prison or non-prison. Why would an inmate be able to?

You can record you own calls, I don't know why you'd want to but it's legal.

She wasn't saying it was illegal. She was just saying she can't do so conveniently.

Actually it is is illegal in certain circumstances. In what are called "two-party" states you cannot record a conversation without the consent of both parties. So you have to tell them it's being recorded or have a beep tone on the line every 15 seconds.

But, there's no convenient way to do it with a cell phone. Cell phone apps that do it, do it by creating a 3-way call and recording the call at the third number.

I used to have an answering machine that would record my calls, and also a voice-activated recorder that I could plug into my landline.

Why would I want to do it? Three obvious reasons. One, to confirm to myself that I said or heard something that I wasn't 100% sure of. Second, suppose I'm talking to a client and I want to review figures or instructions they gave me. Third, suppose I'm talking to a company and there's a dispute over what's said. I once had a dispute with a major credit card company where they promised to do something and their failure to do so cost me thousands of dollars. I eventually settled with them on favorable terms, but it would have helped to have the recording. In fact, a main reason I was able to get a favorable settlement was because we had a conference call with my stockbroker and they had recorded the call. I never got the recording from them, but the fact that I could have influenced the credit card company to settle.
