Default Legislature considers privatizing

"All the financial savings from privatization would be expected to go to local sheriffs who house state prisoners in local jails, to provide more educational programming and provide more rehabilitative services, according to the legislation. "

I hope they do a better job than the private prisons in GA. My son is at one & the educational opportunities & rehab services are a joke. But at least Louisiana is having a dialogue about reform & change. I have been getting the newsletters & updates from 2 Louisiana advocacy groups- VOTE Nola & Capital Area ReEntry Coalition. They are both working with elected officials to make changes & are a good source of information. It's a beginning but so much work lies ahead.

Well, I am not liking that idea at all. From experience, I know that privately run prisons cut whatever corners they can to maximize profits. Their mission statements talk about programs for inmates. The reality is that they don't do squat.

You're so right. My son is in a private prison in Georgia. They have almost no programs & he spends most of his time listening to NPR on his radio or reading magazines. It's like being in school detention. You just hang out until you finish the time assigned.
