Default Greeting cards no longer allowed in Louisiana Prisons

Quote from article out of the Morning Advocate 8/1/16

Prison mail policy

For several years, our church has had a ministry in which parishioners send non-musical birthday greeting cards to inmates at Angola and other Louisiana correctional centers. No personal information is included in the cards, which usually have a simple quote from Scripture, a prayer or birthday wishes. Recently, our cards to inmates at Avoyelles Correctional Center and Madison Parish Detention Center were returned with a rubber stamp marked: Return to Sender – No Greeting Cards Allowed. Has there been a policy change for all Louisiana prisons?
Yes, says Natalie LaBorde, a state Department of Corrections spokeswoman. “The policy was changed at the end of last year in response to an increase in contraband — specifically Suboxone, which is a thin dissolving strip similar to Listerine breath strips. These strips can be easily hidden in cards, under stickers, etc.
“We do, however, still allow paper letters — just no decorative stationary or stickers.”
And, she adds: “Please tell the ministry that we are grateful for their continued service.”

This isnt the first state to ban greetings cards, lets just hope all the others dont follow suit I know how much joy colourful greetings cards bring in a dark world.

Grrrr I know it alot of cases we're not dealing with angelical little cherubs, but the reason why cards are getting banned really pisses me off....I get that addicts have a problem but instead of stopping the innocent senders from not being able to send card cheer, why not add more rehab programmes at the facilities to 'clean up' those who are dealing with withdrawals etc? Rant over, thanks for sharing the info. I was just about to send a card to someone in Angola, so now I'll have to get creative with what I send him, and it just won't get to be counted on the stats on here in the card forum.

Hugs
Naomi

If the 'whatever they are', can be hidden under stickers, how long before they ban ANYTHING with postage stamps. Surely they're stickers

Suboxone strips are a huge problem.....that's why KY went to "no colored envelopes" but I'm not understanding the prohibition on perfume on letters (in ky).
