Default Its official: conjugal visits for ALL same sex couples

Gays and lesbians allowed conjugal visits in prisons

Mark Martin, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau
(06-01) 04:00 PDT Sacramento -- California's prison system is changing its regulations to allow conjugal visits for gay and lesbian inmates in response to a legal threat and a 2003 law that gave domestic partners many of the same rights as married couples.
Facing a complaint from an inmate in a Vacaville prison and pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has begun to allow overnight visits for inmates with registered domestic partners and is to adopt permanent regulations later this year. The change will allow gay and lesbian inmates the same rights as other inmates, who are eligible to spend up to three days with family members in living areas -- usually trailers -- on prison grounds.

Heres one of the articles saying CDCR has announced this as a state wide policy.
check out spitzers comments at the end too.....

Just to avoid any confusion, the article says that same-sex couples are subject to the same restrictions as non same-sex couples. This means they have to be registered domestic partners (just as any other couple needs to be married), and the inmate can't be in one of the categories that isn't allowed family visits (lifers, etc.). As I said in a previous thread on the topic, any changes that support equality and a broader defintion of who is eligible for family visiting is a good thing for all of us.

(Maggie--I'm posting this since I thought some folks might misinterpret the "ALL" in your thread title. Thanks for the update!)

As for Todd Spitzer, he needs to just go away. Far, far away.

ah yes, good thinking. my reference to ALL was because the previous article was regarding a visit for the one inmate and his domestic partner that sued CDCR with the ACLU's help. they've expanded that from this one couple, to all domestic couples. nice clarification, JMK.

and of course, i agree entirely about good old Mr spitzer. he is really something else. it seems he always has something negative to say when it comes to prisoners in california. can't he find another issue to harp at?

The government really wants everyone votes, but they don't care about everyone's feelings. Why not let lifers or death row inmates have visits. I think that would be the only way this law would make since. The gov't needs to fix this overcrowding.
