Default Addressing letters/envelopes to inmates in Pennsylvania

So I keep hearing multiple things about how to address an inmate via mail. Iíve been told I have to write their inmate number on the envelope and the actual letter or he will not receive the mail. Iíve also been told that it only needs to be on the envelope. Can anyone help me out as far as what you have to do so that he will receive my letters? Thank you!!

Maybe it depends on the facility ?? I donít know too much about all the jails in PA but I know my boyfriend is in a county jail in PA and I donít have to write to his inmate ID on the envelope or letter (Iím not sure if that is the same for all the county jails or just the one he is at). His brother however is in a state prison in PA and we have to write his inmate ID on the envelope but not on the letters. If anything I would write the ID number on the envelope and if you wanna be extra cautious write it on the letter as well. Also try to check the prisons website to see if they have any info for writing an inmate !!

He is in state prison, and at first I was only putting the inmate number on the envelope but then someone told me I had to do both so I was worried he wouldn’t get any of them. But thank you! I will check the website.

PA mail does not go to the facility...it goes to FLORIDA. Yeah, I know, how wrong is that!?!?!

See the following PA thread (its a sticky at the top of this same PA forum):

I did see that thread but didnít see anything posted recently. I called the prison and told me the inmate number only needs to be on the envelope to reach them. Has anyone sent letters recently? Online it says 3-6 days for them to receive the letters wasnít sure if that were accurate or not.

Default Letters and Email

Mailed a letter to my son at Camp Hill. Took 6 days to get there.
Was sending email through GTL. Thought he would receive quicker than regular mail. Found out none of them reached him. They had no problem taking my money. Could not get a straight answer as to what happened to the emails. Not happy with GTL.

The proper address format is contained in the thread referenced by Patchouli, above.

You don't need any information on the letter itself, but I generally place it at the top of the letter anyway. The handlers in Florida can easily drop a paper and then try to match it with the envelope. I mail 6 to 10 letters per week around the state and have had the wrong letters reach the prisoners. (One prisoner gets two; someone else gents nothing; each sent in separate, properly addressed envelopes.)

So why risk it? When they get things mixed up, would you rather they be able to quickly sort it out, or would you be glad for the chance to complain? My preference is that a letter reach the prisoner as quickly as possible.

My turn-around time is averaging three postal days. Mail them on Monday, reaching prisoners on Thursday.
