Well my husband said that a lady from the parole board came around to every class and told them that the Good Time law was passed and that Gov Snyder will sign the bill April 10th. He didn't hear this himself but everyone is excited and calling their loved ones etc. I hope this is true.

Yep I've been watching it. And I never told my husband that courts were adjourned until April 10th. He said several guys from different classes one of which he's good friends with in there said the last lady was from the parole board and that she came in and read the bill and said the gov was signing it on April 10. I guess we just wait and see if she was billshitting or not.

OMG, my prayers would be answered. I'm not able to go and see my love because of the distance between us. But if this go through he will be home in like 9 months. I pray every night for something to change and let him come home to me.

Default keep in mind

This bill's passing would go a long way toward moving non-violent people out of the prison system. However, keep in mind the limits of this bill:
  • It would allow for a reduction to both the ERD and Max Out;
  • It can be taken away by prison officials for major misconducts;
  • It has no affect on parole board decisions other than establish when a person becomes eligible for parole;
  • It does absolutely nothing to the sentencing guidelines or the sentencing judge's discretion.

And I have no idea how the legislature will reconcile this with Truth In Sentencing. I would not expect to see a reduction in the number of people sent to prison. I would expect judges to factor good time into sentencing, just as they had in the past (e.g. if a judge thinks 4 years is appropriate, they will just sentence a person to 4.5 years to account for the potential good time). Even with that, I would hope this helps make prisons safer by providing a real incentive to focus and stay out of trouble.

I think most people are here hoping that their loved ones who are already incarcerated will benefit from this bill. I know i am. I also know that people who are good hence the name "goodtime" should benefit from this bill.

I'm sort of butting in here because I'm not in MI, but this is exactly the battle we're watching unfold in CA. Last year they passed legislation to make earning credits more accessible to a greater number of people. Now we're waiting anxiously to see how sentencing from here forward changes. In response, we're seeing bills demanding the list of violent offenses be expanded so less would qualify and we expect that judges and DAs will adjust sentencing by padding the good time into their decision. The majority of folks passed the bill that expanded good time with their loved one in mind, which is expected but incredibly short-sighted. But that fallout is that future inmates-- potentially our own loved ones when considering recidivism rates, will see harsher sentencing down the road.

This is why we say press for sentencing reform first.

(Ok..I'm out, taking my soap box with me)

Hi I'm new to the site and I was specifically looking for information on the good time bill. My Best Friend is incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit because I was with him when he was arrested, and it's been 5 years already into his sentence I write him multiple times a week and remind him he is loved and supported. He's really excited when he heard the prison talk about the good time bill as am I but I can't find a site to get all the up to date information on it. I will check back tomorrow and will be praying extra hard tonight. If you know a website to visit I would also appreciate that. Thanks and god bless everyone and your loved ones!

You should all read this article and sign the petition at the end. I can't post URLs for some reason so I'm splitting it up it's "sawarimi" then ".org" then "/archives/1775". Let's get as many signatures as possible and put pressure on them to put the bill back on the table by saying this is what the people want. Once you confirm your e-mail address your signature will be sent to State Rep. David LaGrand. You can also contact him directly by calling him or sending him a mail with your name, address, phone number and e-mail address stating that you support the Good Time House Bill 5666.

He heard it was but from what I'm reading it's not. Sign the petition and get as many people as you can to sign it.
