Default UPDATE-Inmate legal mail screening and scanning

There seems to be a settlement according to this article and this article April 6th 2019 is when the DOC will no longer have inmate legal mail screened and then scanned prior to the inmate receiving it. In terms that the legal mail can be sent directly to the inmate and not have to go to Florida first.

So far this only applies to inmate legal mail coming from their attorneys.

Does anyone else have a bit more information on this settlement?

Thanks

Let me correct this and point out that this topic is being discussed in a different thread.

Legal mail NEVER went to Florida. All mail from courts or from attorneys was sent directly to the facility. Mail from attorneys had to display a verified Attorney Control Number, which was then blacked-out before the mail was handed to the inmate. (This prevented ACNs from being pirated.) The contents were copied in front of the inmate on camera. The originals were then sealed with evidence tape and secured. They would then be destroyed by a bonded contractor.

The ACLU, Abolitionist Law Project and others sued on the grounds that this policy had a chilling effect on attorney-client communication. After about a week of testimony by attorneys on both sides, a settlement conference began the DOC is coming up with a new policy. we may see it as early as next week.
