Default Intro--splangie from Colorado

Hello Everyone,

I just found my birth father. He is at Ramsey 1 in Texas for murder, rape, kidnapping, meth and a few other things. He is 70 and has been in prison over 40 years.

Greg

Hi splangie, welcome to PTO! Now that you have that info, are you going to reach out to him? I like to think that he's done his time well and taken advantage of any programs available to him. Depending on his actual sentence, he could very well see the Board & make parole.

Read in the forums, and post any questions you may have. I'm glad you found us

Hey patchouli,

Thanks for the reply. I found my birth mother and the rest of that side of the family many years ago but about 2 years ago, after decades of searching, found him in a Texas prison. We have never met each other. He has been there for the last 30 years. He has a long history of drugs, burglary, kidnapping, rape, murder and prison from California to Texas and who knows where else. I have researched all of his convictions in Texas starting from 1975. After many attempts, I finally sent a note a few weeks ago. He has replied. I sent back a brief life history this week and asked him to tell me about his family and life before prison. So I anxiously await. He will be eligible for parole in 4 or 5 years. He says he is in good health, has found God and is a master leather craftsman or something like that. I have shared all of the information with my birth mother so she knows we are in contact and has encouraged it. I would like to visit him, I think. But I am worried he will ask for help that I cannot give and even more help if he gets out. Only time will tell of course.

Just be honest with him about where your boundaries are. Then just stick to them. If you are not financially able to help him, let him know that upfront. Get to know the man he is, none of us will ever be perfect so take the time to get one another and see where it goes. Who knows, you may be the last amends he needs to make to achieve peace in his life. And for yours too.

Thank you. I will. I am not familiar with how the parole system works for people his age who have been in for so long. My wife didn't even want me to contact him and the first thing she said when I told her I was ready to send the letter was she would never want him to even live near us. We are out of state so I don't think that would be an option for many years after release, but like I said I don't know how his parole would work.

I remember going to the court house in Fort Worth and finding the first batch of court records and evidence and references to other convictions and counties in Texas. He wasn't in this time for his worst offenses. He had been in from 1976 to 83 for murdering a woman. She had 5 children. Sentenced to only 13 years and released on parole in less than 8. It was unbelievable. I sat there for over 4 hours reading it all. Then I went to another court house and read more. I guess you can understand why sending the note was so difficult. I wrote dozens. I even addressed, stamped and sealed a few. But they never went.

Well I know TX has a pretty strict supervision program for someone with a sex offense on their record. So him traveling to your state (legally, anyway) is pretty remote.
So your wife shouldnt fear too much in that regard.

Welcome to PTO.
