Now, the board has entered a new era, empowered to grant more offenders a chance at parole after a decade's worth of court decisions and state laws that have broadened its discretion. Read More.....

We wonder why people don't understand the laws or know which questions to ask. I'm glad they're covering this, but get it right. There's enough confusion already.

"New guidelines to implement the initiative, which took effect this month, allow most inmates to earn additional time toward completing their sentences, and to move up their parole hearings by earning credits for good behavior and enrolling in career, rehabilitation and education programs. They also expand parole consideration to prisoners whose primary sentences are for crimes not designated as “violent” under California law, and who have served the full term for those offenses."

No, it isn't the full term. It's the full term of the controlling offense (the longest term of their sentence) which does include strike sentencing but before enhancements and alternate sentencing.

"Corrections officials previously offered parole eligibility only for nonviolent inmates who had been charged with a second strike under the state’s three-strikes law, and served 50% of their sentences. Of those nearly 6,200 referrals, 28% have been approved for release."

Unless I'm misreading, this is really off. BPH "offers" parole eligibility to anyone approved via the parole process specific to their circumstances. Violent offenders, non-violent offenders, indeterminate to Lifers.

We have a very active thread with current information and folks up to speed on how 57 might affect your LO. I'd encourage anyone with questions or experiences to share to post there.

Hey Miamac thanks for the link! I don't know about this but have a close friend in CA prison who's been in since the early 90s - one of the first batch in the 3-strikes-out law. It's been so long and unnecessary. I would looooovve to see him finally be out!

Thank you to the OP too, for opening the door
