Default Solar eclipse by zip code: Find out if you live in the path

...and if you're looking for those special glasses to watch the eclipse, check with your local library Here is an interactive map of libraries that are hosting Eclipse Events, complete with free glasses:

http://spacescience.org/software/libraries/map.php

...and an interactive map that tells you if you are in the path of the eclipse:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/m/f52e99d...p-code%3A.html

The county I live in isn't too far from the number one place in the world to watch the eclipse:
Hopkinsville, KY

I have to work that day.
Since it sounds like it will be the morning time when its semi near us...its a coin toss if we will be able to see the eclipse. It would only be partial anyway (for us)
And well..........there is always the fog. lol.

I will only get a partial eclipse, but I've seen total eclipses before, and it's eerie/cool!

I'm anxious about it all. To be on the safe side I will get a couple of pairs but I don't know if we'll go out to watch it.

Was listening to the radio yesterday and they put on this guy talking about the eclipse.
He as saying that Oregon will get the total effect. Its supposed to be totally dark, and you will be able to see the stars. Birds will start to coo like they do when its nighttime.
He did say the effect will only be totally dark for about 2 min. and then it will start to lighten up again.
This sounds so cool!

In my area, we will only get a partial. And it will be from about 9am to maybe 11am.
And yeah, they are predicting a good possibility of fog. So we may not notice anything down here.

He did say to pay attention to the shadows thru the trees. I forget or didnt understand exactly why or how
Also dont look directly at it. (the sun)

oops looks like I lied about how long

I learned about it in astronomy last year, All of my professors are actually taking the day off and encouraging students to take a road trip! I think I'll just drive up for the view and not plan on partying with all of the other science nerds! lol Even if our view isn't too well, living to see the slightest bit of it is awesome. I hiked a mountain to see the Endeavour space shuttle take it's last flight in 2011 (I think). I still can't stop talking about it lol.

Ah, the Perseids are my favorite! Every year I lie out in the horse pastures watching. Even year they wander over to the strange lump on the grass, sniff, and go about the business of grazing. Hi/bye and back to the stars.

I love this event. I was just out and even though it's early here, I saw five with incredible tails. I'll probably go out again in a few hours. We've got a big lighting storm off to the east, as well, so it's sort of an electrical competition.

I've seen all sorts of examples of homemade gadgets that can be used to safely watch the eclipse using paper plates, cereal boxes....and one item in particular caught my eye - a welders hood. That I have. Now if I can figure out how to remove the window thingy from the helmet so I don't have to wear the whole helmet I'm sure it comes off, I just haven't attempted it yet

I'm in Texas so we will only see a partial at most. Do we still need glasses?

If you plan on looking at the sun, yes you need the glasses.

Just saw a fb post warning folks to keep pets indoors.

Here is a little video to make a viewing box

DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN!!! Especially if you're only seeing a partial eclipse. The sun is dangerous, period. There are a couple of minutes, during the totality, that you can look at the sun, but that's only in the totality and only for 2 minutes max. Partial eclipses are more dangerous, all the time....

Just reiterating, for those trying to catch up :>))

I adapted a ghetto little cereal box into a viewer with white paper and foil. It works OK but TMZ has a fantastic live stream of the event.

I will only be seeing it on the TV and pictures from friends on facebook, but I have seen an eclipse before years ago and it was amazing. I hope you all enjoy it.

I adapted a really long box - much larger projection of the event! It's always cool to watch!
