If you go to the NYS DOCS web site, in the left hand column you will see program services. That tells you all the programs and what prisons they are offered in with a brief description.

The only problem is you don't get to pick your prison and they pick the programs for you

You won't be able to pick prison. But once he is there you can give him heads up about what to ask for. The more informed you are the better.

Most prisons have several programs to participate in, but it all depends on what facility they go to. The judge won't decide the facility either. Corrections will look over his case, make sure nothing was hidden in the plea, look at his record and chose a facility based on whether they feel he is minimum, medium, or maximum.

They have school for general ed and usually vocational training in several trades. They also have rehabilitation programs, community service, ethnicity programs, and more. The judge can mandate or suggest a program HOWEVER corrections does not have to uphold the judges order. Corrections is a funny animal, they can do whatever they please. It is good to look at programs so that your LO can ask for them, but nothing is guaranteed. Some programs allow for an inmate to serve a lesser sentence, these are the programs you would want to bring up to the judge. However, if they are considering your LO's case violent, there are not many options to get out early for violent offenders.

Hope this helps, I wish you the best of luck!
