hey ladies! I've recently gotten stitches on my finger which makes it hard to grip a pencil and write; I have typed out a letter on the computer to send to my man --> can I print it out and send it to him or would KVSP not let it through??

Default Can someone tell me how to send books, etc to an inmate at Kern Valley CA

My brother got 24 years and is in Max or whatever you call the deal where he is locked down for 23 hours a day. LOL. I think that in a year I am going to know so much about prisons and jails that I'll probably be qualified to work in a correctional facility.

He is in Kern Valley Prison in California.

Since he has been there about three weeks are we able to send him anything like: Stamps, books, money on his books?

Call 661-721-6300 press 1 then 1 then 1....that is the mail room. Theywill be able to tell you what they can and can not have........
or you can look on the computer under Kern Valley State Prison.
Look for mail guidelines and it will give you a 2 page list of do's and don'ts.

Default Mail Info Found It

A. Mail
Prisoners are allowed to receive mail from anyone other than an incarcerated person or one released from prison within the last year. To receive mail from another prisoner or those recently released, the prisoner must seek the Warden’s approval. There is no limitation on the number of people who may correspond with the prisoner or the number of mail items a prisoner may receive. The only restriction on content of written communication is that it may not contain anything that is a threat or potential threat to another (including discussion of a future criminal act, discussion of an escape, discussion of disrupting the security of the prison, coded messages, maps depicting the area in which the prison is located, gang-related comments or photographs, or photographs of nudity or sexual conduct).
All mail sent to or from prisoners is inspected to the extent necessary to ensure that there is nothing unacceptable in the envelope and to ensure that the content does not contain anything that presents a danger or threat of danger to any person. As a practical matter, that means that any mail sent to the prisoner is opened by mailroom staff, which checks the envelope for enclosures and quickly examines the written content, although it may be more thoroughly reviewed at any time.
Correspondents may send prisoners letters (not more than 10 pages in one envelope), cards (without embellishments such as stickers or glitter), photographs (limited to 10 per envelope and not larger than 8" x 10"), drawings, children’s schoolwork, articles cut from newspapers or magazines, etc. Correspondents may not send the following directly to a prisoner: books, magazines, newspapers, or packages; such matters must be sent through approved vendors and the prisoner can advise his/her family and friends about that procedure.
All mail should be addressed to the prisoner with his/her full name, his/her CDCR number, his/her housing, and the address of the prison. Most prisons have a post office box number to which prisoner mail is to be sent. The address for prisoner mail at the prison you are going to send mail to can be obtained on the CDCR website or by calling the prison.
You may enclose a money order or check in an envelope sent to a prisoner. Mailroom staff will take the money order or check out when the mail is inspected and send it to trust accounts, where it will be credited to the prisoner’s account. Money may also be sent to a prisoner by credit card through an approved telephone vendor (i.e., Western Union, J-Pay), but there is a charge for that procedure.
The prisons try to deliver mail to a prisoner within seven days of its arrival at the prison, but the amount of mail, turnover of mailroom staff, and mailroom vacancies may cause additional delays. Overnight or express mail will arrive at the institution more quickly, but will not be searched, reviewed, or delivered any differently
than first class mail. Correspondents can help prevent unnecessary delay in the mail by ensuring the address is clear and complete, and that the mail contains no unauthorized material. Legal mail will be delivered on an expedited schedule.

Needless to say.... I cried when I opened my mail box today.. I finally got a letter from B yard. He didn't say much about the lockdown just that poor thing is running out of food. He sent it out 11/9/13 I got it 11/16/13.. one week is really not bad because the last one took 2 week.

He didn't, he hates asking me for money. I put money on his books anyways just in case. If anything he can get commissary when they get off lockdown.. I think I find out of the food sales here. He is alway saying I do enough for him just being there. But you all know we love taking care of our men.. and try to give them a chance to enjoy a little of the out side . I hope you hear from your guy soon

Thank you for always replying back fast :-) . I agree I love surprising my love with things like the food sale but it sucks they won't get to participate in this one. Tamales are his favorite too ... Maybe next time.
And I will post if I hear anything or if I get a suprise in my mailbox lol

Hello everyone! my name is chelsea and my fiancee is at north kern. you guys have been very helpful with general information and I just downloaded the postcard app as well. Its hard for me to get used to the mailing system. I'm used to him getting my letters in a day or two and now its taking much longer. Ive written him three times within the past 6 days and have received nothing yet. Is mail slow up there?

Hi Chelsea. You'll want to search for North Kern State Prison for information specific to your fiance's facility. This forum is for the facility "next door", Kern Valley State Prison. Hope you get your mail soon!

Mail at Kern Valley has been taking a while, but you might want to go to the North Kern Valley forum, you might be able to get more information from there. Also as for sending money I've used JPay, you can also send through Western Union. I did it once but to be honest I don't remember how I did it or what code I used. Good Luck

My mail from him has been arriving as usual, but he called yesterday and said he just caught three letters that I sent a month ago. So there's some lag happening...sounds like in both directions!

Hope you get your letter soon.

I received a letter yesteray dated 11/20/13. It has the post date of 11/22/13 and I received it on 11/25/13. It looks likes mail going out is getting a little better. Although he said on 11/19 he had just received two of my letters one from 11/7 and the other from 11/13
