Default Price Increase for Inmate 'Store' Items

My husband tells me that there is a new price list for inmate store items. I am not sure when it starts, or if it already started, but my husband tells me that the prices have about doubled. I am having a hard enough time managing the money that I do send him every two weeks and I can't afford a price increase now. Why the huge jump in prices I wonder, and who gets the lions share of it; the vendor or AZDOC.

It's not an error, mine told me about the prices going up too. He said they're putting some new things on the store list too.

My son says the price increase starts the first of July. He ordered a lot of what he uses this last order. We will see if that works before the price increase. An increase is what we expect because it is happening to the things we buy out here but a large price increase is not what one would expect. It is hard for us all trying to keep up and make their life a little more pleasant.

I just confirmed this with the hubby. He said some property items (clothes, shoes, tv's radios, etc) are going down in price but most everything else is going up. He says these protein bar things he gets are usually like 38 cents and are going up to 90. Ugh!

Yes, my son told us about the higher prices when we visited last week. Some items doubled, and some almost tripled. Worse though is that they also changed up the inventory, meaning they no longer can buy some of the stuff they used to be able to buy.

MrB said that they are supposed to be changing venders in 2018. That could, potentially, be the reason for the price increase. Keefe knows they are going to be losing the contract, so they are raising prices to be a butt. It could be that they are paying their employees higher wages and are raising prices to cover the increases salaries. It could even be because their supplier has changed prices. Who knows. It's just not good for families who are already struggling because they have someone incarcerated.

Hubby told me that a couple things the prices actually went down on. He mentioned paint specifically, which is a huge benefit to him because he does a lot of art projects for the kids.

Perryville inmates are boycotting the commissary.

Selling basic necessities like aspirin, shampoo, dental floss, and cough drops to a captive audience is a highly lucrative business model. In 2012, the Keefe Commissary Network, which contracts with Arizona state prisons, reported total sales of $375 million and a profit margin that exceeded Walmart’s.
