In November I am going to drive 2860 miles round trip to see my son. This will be my first visit since he was arrested. We are poor and this will probably be our only visit. It costs too much to drive that far on a fixed income retirement budget. It is sad but we may only be able to see him at sentencing because so far the prison hasn't approved the special visit, and the sentencing date doesn't line up with the regular visitation schedule. *sigh* :-(

I will be traveling 1,758 plus some due to driving to airports to fly out and from airports to drive to the prison. Not quite sure how often this trip will done, due to the cost of the trip. This will be our first trip, since last seeing him in 2013.

I'll be making my first visit next month around Christmas. It's a 8 1/2 hr drive. I'm really nervous but excited to finally see him. I'm not really sure what to expect. I read the visitation rules and he's told me some stuff but I'm still nervous about the whole process. I've never been to a prison.

I wake up around 4:45 am, leave by 5:30, drive between 3 & 3 1/2 hours. Visit for 6 hours. Then drive back and be home by 7:30pm. By the end Iím exhausted. I go about 3 Sundayís a month. Itís tiring and a bit costly with gas but heís worth it. I treasure our visits ♥️

Just be sure to have your ID, the right amount of allowed money for snacks or less, and nothing else. Probably best not to go in nude or with too revealing of clothing. Just read the visitation rules and you'll be ok. IF you have any doubt, carry extra clothes in the car so if you're turned away, you don't have to drive to the mall to buy clothes.

Currently mine is 25 minutes away so I got see him twice a week (they get 8 visits a month). I'm lucky that we can do that for now because once he's transferred to Federal the calls will cut down and the visits if they send him far. I've already told him if I have to fly he'll probably only see me 2-4 times a year.

I used to drive 12 hours each way to see my husband once a month for a three-hour, non-contact visit. He finished his state time, was transferred to the Feds, and subsequently transferred 10 states, 2,700 miles away from home. Definitely canít go monthly, but Iím there several times a year.
