I'm getting married in Kansas in January 2004. The process was fairly simple. We had to attend 3 couseling sessions with the chaplain at the facility. The warden allowed a visit for my children prior to the wedding since he is not their biological Father, and we met since he's been in. We are allowed 10 guests. My children don't count but the minister does. He can wear a shirt and tie, and I'm allowed a bouquet. The Chaplains there will not perform the ceremony. You have to find your own minister or there's a Judge that will come over and do the wedding for $100.00 and it has to be held on a Thursday. One disposable camera is allowed. My wedding is going to be at EDCF. We get an all day visit the weekend following the wedding. I must say they have been real cool about everything.

Getting the license without him being there was no problem at all. I just had to have his SS# and other information. The cost was $75.00 and there was a 3 day waiting period. I forgot to say he can also have a wedding band valued at $50.00 or less.

My fiance is in Winfield now, and supposedly on his way to wichita work release. We are awaiting the denial of his interstate companct and then we will probably have to get married. I think each prison in Kansas is different because Winfield is a minimum camp. He had to have 3 counseling sessions with the chaplain and we cannot take any pictures at all. So the camp seems more strict. The county court office where I have called to ask how to get a marriage license 5 times now, I finally got an answer. They seem so rude. As soon as you mention "incarcerated." They said if you can get here with a copy of his ID, that should work.

Thumbs up Link to the application for marriage license--Kansas...

Here is the link to download the marriage license application. I haven't gone through this process yet but from what I understand via online research and a half dozen phone calls...this form must be filled out by the inmate and notarized then I/you can take it in with a copy of my/your ID and apply to get the license. Then there is a three day waiting period before you can pick up the license. You must take in your ID again when you go to pick up the license. You have six months to use the license and file it back with the court clerk at which time it is permenantly filed with Vital Statistics

There is some confusion depending on who I've spoken to about whether the inmates ID is needed (or a copy of it)...some say yes and some say no. I'm thinking it will depend on the county and the person who's serving you at the courthouse.

http://kdheks.gov/vital/marriage.html

Hope this helps someone so you don't have to search around for quite as many hours as I did trying to find this info!! Good luck!!

Hey everyone, actually we got married while he was in county because we knew it would be faster & easier that way. We did not have to have any counseling. The process took about a week or two. I didn't have to find a minister because a retired judge married us. We were not allowed flowers or a camera. We were allowed two guests, to be our witnesses. I went downtown (wichita) to the courthouse on the 7th floor and got a marriage liscense application, the process takes 3 business days, I filled it out then took it to county and had him sign it. I returned it after the 3 days passed, and I had my marriage liscense. I called up a retired judge (they provided the number) and he was available within two days. We had the ceremony, although simple, it was still very cute . I had to pay $75 for the liscense and $100 for the judge. He had to wear his jumpsuit, I wore a white sun dress, with a white jacket on top, and black heels, (usual visitation clothes I assume). I did bring a wedding band for him, but I had to keep it after the ceremony. Now that he is in the process of being transfered to prison I am not sure if he can wear it in there or not, but I will find out ASAP, I hope this helps! If you have any questions just message me

Question Getting Married ...Need Some Help Please :)

We are getting married and I have tried to do as much research as possible, but all I have found are old posts (on here) so I was wondering if anyone has any updated information about getting married in Kansas, at Lansing Correctional Facility to be exact, and if anyone has any advice about finding someone who will marry me & my fiance' or has someone in mind (a minister, priest, etc.) that will do it for a decent price. We were told we could get a Judge to do it but I don't exactly know how to go about finding a judge, so if you got married through a judge what steps did you take in finding one and doing it that way?
Anyways if you got married at Lansing or in Kansas I'd greatly appreciate you telling me about your experience and any advice you could give to help this process go as smoothly as possible.
Thanks In Advance

Congrats on your engagement! I'm getting married but in Cali so I took a peek at DOC website for Kansas and it looks like your LO (and you) will work with the chaplain at his facility to make the arrangements. Your guy will need to send a request to the chaplain explaining that he wants to proceed with a marriage application. I imagine they have a list of approved ministers/officiants as well. Best of luck to you!

(from the DOC)
Can an inmate and I have a wedding ceremony in a correctional facility?
Yes. Inmates make their request through the pastoral care department at which time the chaplain will follow a set of guidelines and protocol for the events leading up to the ceremony that must be approved by the Warden. This will include careful planning and may include marital counseling. The chaplain will lead the couple through this process and advise them of the criteria while keeping administrative staff informed of the proceedings.
All expenses associated with the marriage ceremony are the responsibility of the inmate or prospective spouse.

Default Kansas inmate wedding expierence?

I have known my fiance 7 years now. We got engaged in March of this year. He was sentenced to 10 year and we are planning to get married fall of 2016. Can anyone tell me their experience or offer some advice? I can't wait to marry the man of my dreams and to be honest although the idea of a huge wedding sounds magical. I'm glad to be only planning a small jail wedding. I would love to wear my dream wedding dress but I'm not sure we will be aloud and since he hasn't gotten his permanent placement I'm worried to start getting excited about things we may not be aloud. Any info advice would be appreciated. Also, how did you handle the night after because I'm worried it'll be a happy day and sad lonely night?

Hi I’m wondering about Kansas proxy weddings? There is an officiant advertising that four counties are doing the license by mail still so the one party doesn’t even have to travel there. What are the requirements needed from the incarcerated individual to be able to make this happen? Birth certificate, id, some form requiring a notary, but I’m reading conflicting info about the other half needing to be POA. Or a POA must stand in at the ceremony (which is also virtual right now). This seems too easy and good to be true. It’s not for me but I’m in a debate and want to find more factual information. Tia!!!
