Default Son entering prison. Need advice

My 37 year old son was held in jail for three years and is being sentenced on Monday. His crime was a non violent felony. He violated the graves act and was arrested twice. He is taking a plea deal of possibly 9 years . Will be going somewhere in NJ. Is he able to request a prison that would give him a better chance with programs. Where he could get some help? He'll be filing for an appeal but will still be dealing with prison time.

Any advice? Can we ask for better choices?

Hi Nj mother, I'm sorry for what you & your family are dealing with I'm not terribly familiar with NJ and/or the Graves Act - I did just look it up & read enough to know that its another tough-on-crime bill / feel good legislation that politicians created in an effort to garner votes. This type legislation adds to the already burgeoning prison population.

In KY, new inmates are asked during assessment & classification to list 3 facilities where they'd prefer to do their time. But in the end its a toss up and the inmate is sent wherever there is a bed. However, depending on the state's DOC guidelines, after a certain period of time (with no write-ups, etc) the inmate can request a transfer to another facility. Also, once he sees his counselor he'll have some idea of the programming that they recommend he take.

Good luck with the appeal Keep in m ind that since he's is pleading guilty his appeal options will be limited.

Welcome to PTO!

there is a chance he could request where he wants to go while in CRAF. now just because he requests somewhere doesnt mean he will be sent there. For the most part all the facilities have the same program and they are few and far between. Its truly more about incarceration than rehabilitation.
