Every yard is different and each inmate choses "to or not to" get involved with the politics on the yard. I think, the higher custody yard has more politics, as there tends to be longer-term inmates here, but I have also heard that even lower custody yards has it's own share of games played.

For us on the outside, we really don't understand the racial tension and segregation in the yard, but sadly, we all know it's there.

It's my opinion, that most of the politics are greed related....ran by the need to make money from drugs and gambling, which is the currency "sold" on the inside. And there is a lot of money made in prisons!!!

If an inmate goes in with an addiction problem, drugs are way too easy to get a hold of, but the cost is also great as well.

There are also guys that hustle to survive in prison.

It's also my opinion, that someone who does drugs, gets involved in the politics and/or hustling, dealing with or collecting debt inside, is a good indicator that these behaviors are probably what landed them in prison in the first place and until these habits are broken, they will probably do poorly coming home as well.

With that said, I also think there are politics that happen inside to also keep the peace within the yard, and if done correctly, a good "yard guy", keeps his yard quiet and well managed.

But someone else may see prison politics differently than I do...

Please feel free to comment.....

Like PG says the lower yards are not racial, political, stay with your own kind. Also there is not the need to defend or pay anybody for anything. It is a bit frustrating, for some as far as respect and the inmates sticking together, such as, the CO's are not their friends. For others it is freeing to not have to be (raciest) a hater for your fellow man.

Those with similar "traits" tend to identify with one another, even on a 2 yard.
AZ is similar to CA.

The politics at the Tucson prison drive me up a wall. My husband was in a gang when he was on the streets, but when he got locked up, he refused to be political, however political or not, if there was a riot between races, he would have to be a part of it. Politics are ridiculous because political shit is what got a lot of them in there in the first place...:/

You'll get reprimanded by ppl of your own race, for sure, if you try & associate with someone outside of your race. My loved one didn't live like that as a free man .. he has friends of all races. He's white and gives them a piece of his mind when he's "reprimanded" for associating with another race. I'm afraid for him. He's as bullheaded as me - - or more -- so I worry a LOT. Of course, he has to stick to the DOC rules when it comes to chow and eat with whites only. It's ridiculous, but then, the riot the other day was racially-charged. People in other states don't realize how bad the race problem is here with the illegals overflowing the place and legal citizens, blacks, whites and legal hispanics, being told what to do by an illegal. I can't even fathom the tension. Be thankful if you're not in Az.
