Default Request for halfway house or house arrest

Does anyone know when a prisoner can request a halfway house or house arrest. My mother has a year left in her sentence but has not been offer to put in a request for halfway house or house arrest. Cant they request this if they have a year or less remaining of their sentence? SHe was sentence to 3 yrs from mail fraud and we are still appealing the case

Does she have a lawyer? If so, the lawyer can find out what needs to be done to request a transfer to a HWH. In federal prisons, the request has to be made by the prisoner's unit team, but I don't know anything about the MI system.

Her case manager is the person to talk with about "community corrections" referrals, half way house or home confinement. She will still be "in bop custody", but the Second Chance Act allows them to award up to one year of community corrections for the last portion of every prisoner's sentence. The actual amount of time awarded is totally up to the bop though.
