Default SCDC says some 'problematic inmates' have been moved to a private prison

SCDC says some 'problematic inmates' have been moved to a private prison in Mississippi

Florence County, S.C. (WPDE) — "More than 40 problematic inmates in South Carolina state prisons have been transferred to a prison in Mississippi, according to Dexter Lee with the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) Communications Office.

Lee released the following statement:

"SCDC transferred 48 problematic inmates out of state to help improve the safety and security of our institutions. These inmates were transferred to Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, Mississippi. This institution is operated by CoreCivic. Due to security reasons the appropriate inmate’s family members were notified today regarding their transfer. The agency will periodically review each inmates’ status to determine if a transfer back to South Carolina is justified."

More money into private prisons = higher return for investors. Between this and the immigration facilities, there are some folks raking it in. Sad.

I wish that connection could be made, but many families thought it was a rumor that these men were being sent out of state. This is the last thing people expected as a resolution to what's happening here. The director's constant song is needing money to pay officers to remain on the job, yet this happens.

And how does any of this solve the under-staffing or contraband problems? Especially when most of the shipped inmates had nothing to do with the riot?

It's all such a smoke and mirrors game - look at me I'm doing something, anything and hoping you'll miss its irrelevance.

It just clicked in my brain over coffee this morning-- the beds they're filling in Miss. were just emptied by Cali inmates. They shipped everyone from the private prison, Tallahatchie, back to CA or their remaining contract in Eloy, AZ over the last two months. I bet CoreCivic was beating down SCDCs door to get their business. I'm disgusted that we even allow private investment in incarceration in this country.

After the news reported the transfers, families began speaking out saying their loved ones didn't have the disciplinary problems or connection to the violence that's been taking place. I believe this is no different than them using the tactic of "cracking down" on contraband around the same time with the arrests that are being publicized every so often. Former COs have begun to speak out about what they witnessed going on. I wished they'd done so before dozens of people were seriously injured or died.

Most people here questioned paying the costs for CCA/CoreCivic instead of beginning to release those who are near completing their sentences, seriously consider compassionate release (advocates against this amaze me), and put the money they're using towards staffing, programs, and end the stance of not letting the volunteers come in with their programs.

The sad part is, it's an election year so the governor is on the cellphone contraband bandwagon as the reason for what's taking place and has yet to say anything more about prison reform being a part of his platform and has stated:

"What I’ve done is exercise the authority I have as governor by declaring an emergency in this area to allow (Stirling) to short circuit and to go through without all the red tape." (Post and Courier Apr 23, 2018)

And nobody's bringing up the ~100% bed fill requirements in these private prison contracts...

And nobody's bringing up the ~95+% bed-fill requirements in these private prison contracts...
