I have much more recent ones of Menard but I haven't a clue how to put them here. If anyone can help me not only reduce the size but get them on this site then please PM me. I'm not at all computer literate!!

That photo of the cell must be somewhere other than the PC Unit as it's massive compared to Tony's. He's in with another inmate in a cell measuring 10' x 4'!!!

I loved te photos of Menard. I agree swtmel it is nice to see where they are living. When i got my phone call a couple of days ago-- I told him that I had found this site and it had these pitcures on it. It helps with the loneliness seeing pitcures and you know it is something of "theirs". Thanks again

I've been trying to find pic's of the facilities for a really long time.....how did you find these? And are those the only facilities that have pictures of the inside?

Hi,

Thanks for the photos.

I assume we can't take any photos at the correctional centers. My son has been in three juvenile facilities in the Illinois DOC. I'm an artist (or was one years ago) and I'd like to get some photos of the facilities; especially a detail of the double rows of barbed wire with the facility in the background. I'd appreciate a photo of any youth in DOC clothing and in chains. You can block out the face as I certainly will. Even a correctional vehicle.

My son has been in IYC-Chicago, IYC-St. Charles and at IYC-Kewanee on court writs. Oh, River Valley Juvenile Detention Center, as well. Chicago & River Valley are important because there are no fences, indicating that the youth are never allowed outdoors. But the double rows of barbed wire symbolize the cruelty of imprisoning youth.

I want to paint about this experience (or just publish the photos, if I got enough of them) and maybe someday expose this insanity of locking up non-violent youth in prisons. Any photos would be appreciated. I doubt this idea (of getting photos) will be possible, but I want to ask. I'll probably have to do this from memory instead.

Thanks much.

Jean

I am thinking that photos from the insides come from news programs? published articles, or something like that? Obviously with a good camera you could take a photo of the front from the road. It's kind of silly. In CA there is a photo of each institution under facilities.

Thanks CET,

I suppose a good camera with a zoom would do the trick, but if it's not allowed, I don't want to chance it.

You said,
"I am thinking that photos from the insides come from news programs? published articles, or something like that?"

That makes sense, but I haven't read any coverage of juvenile prisons in Illinois. I'll try the libraries.

Thanks again,

Jean

jean, maybe you could just contact some of the institutions and ask them? they show plenty of inmates, including naked ones with air brushed areas, on those shows. I bet there are a few young inmates who would love to have some art work done of themselves.

Thanks CET,

I think I have enough to work with. When I visit him or see him in the Correctional van when he's delivered to court, it breaks my heart EVERY time & I want to photograph it. It's frustrating that I can't.

I think pictures can say more than words, since few people care about the subject (the incarceration of juveniles) unless it happens to someone they know.

Plus, this county's judicial system needs to be exposed!

Jean
