Hey guys! David made it to the Gateway HWH in Dallas about 5 yeterday afternoon. I talked to him lst night about 10:15. They do get to call home at no charge. So I expect to here from him often. The oreintation last for 10 days. They will not get passes until they have a job. They were taking them to Wal-mart today. My cousing ran his clothes by to him a little while ago. She didnt get to see him. They went through the box and checked it out. He said, he would take it to him. He did tell my cousing that, if he asked for a cell phone dont get him one. It isn't allowed. Kim said, it was kind of strange, because he said it out of the clear blue. But he sound well. I will keep you posted as I hea rules and such..

Yeah for Joy and David.
At the Abode -- cell phones are big no no's too. However since they are allowed to have a car a lot of the guys have phones in them -- that is allowed they just have to be very careful not to take it inside with them.

I have a question about the phone calls at Gateway... Can they only call home from the Gateway phones or can they call other places and can they only make phone calls local to the Dallas area? I don't live in Dallas and where I'm living now isn't where he will be paroling to, so I'm wondering if he'll be able to call me at all.

Those cell phones are a necessary evil to where I help out. We abolished them once but it didn't last. We send so many guys out on different contract jobs if we cant keep up with them it is a wreck. But they better not go off in a meeting.

Lucky, I can answer some of your questions. They can call out of the Dallas area. I'm south of Houston. I'm not a family member, but he is paroleing to my house. But I think they can call anyone, but I will check with David on that.

David's Joy
You guys and gals know you can call the house and ask right? The ones I have stayed at and am associated with don't turn away calls. I have always been able to call out anywhere I have been. Now if the call is not local you have to have a way to pay to call (collect etc.). At the house I work at they kept figuring out ways to get around the long distance on the pay phone. If you have had some experience with TDCJ you know the phone company seems to be a step behind keeping up with the enterprising minds in there. That is why calling out of TDCJ has become so difficult. We finally took the pay phone out at our house. Now they just have a line that is pure local. If you need to call long distance you have to come to the office.

Remember this is a HALF WAY house, at least ours is. We have guys who are parolees, some who are sent there from the free world by probation to show they don't need to GO to TDC, while others are there to wait on a SAFP to open up. Still others to show they are doing what they can before their docket is called. Ours is not a place to start scheming ways to get around rules. Remember most of our staff is ex-TDC. We know the tricks. We normally spot trouble way before it gets there. We have to toss you out because you want to bend things to your liking who ever you have to answer to gets a call. Most of the people on this board have people coming out of TDC so tell your guys they are too close to being free, dont mess it up now. I have watched guys get thrown out on their 88th day. It makes us guys who give a crap sick to our stomachs. Your natural reaction would be they are so close let them go. Well enabling attitudes like that is what got them here in the first place. We have a group of men we are trying to help. Not just one.

Thanks Joy for the info. I just didn't have a clue (a road not traveled yet) I am just trying to make myself aware of the rules, because we haven't come this far to break them now by any means. Thanks again and have a blessed day!

I talked to David Sunday. He said, that guys that have jobs are getting out at about 75 days. But this is at Gateway in Dallas. They allow them to make calls about 3 times a week, but it is very late, because it is after groups. David had his first meeting with parole yesterday, and he had to go to the courthouse to get a paper signed saying he doesn't owe any court fees. He said the food was pretty good. He has had bacon 2. It has been almost 10 years for that. He said it felt really good to have his own clothes on.
Lucky, David did say that everyone is nice.
Well that is about all I can think of. I'll keep you posted as I hear.

Keep fingers crossed everyone -- Justin has completed all his requirements and will find out tuesday if he gets to leave early. We are hoping for a 15 day reduction.
Tell your guys and gals -- that attending all meetings and getting that job is the most important thing to getting out early.
Love to you all
and Thank you VETS, past and present.

I would bet it goes just as you say. By far most of the guys come out of lock up with a lot more mature attitude about accepting responsibility and doing what is required of them. The majority being probably 95% are a pleasure to work with and help out. Tell him good luck and Godspeed.

Default help for some inmates about to be release HWH

can somebdoy please help me with some questions I have for half way house...
Like are they full or when can you get weekend furloughs and what are living conditions and most importantly are they sending people home early and under what conditions. this will probably change from place to place but for the one in houston and the one in dallas or Hutchins HWH .

I can answer most of your questions, This thread is pretty complete and should answer others.
Most HWH's require an orientation period of 10 to 15 days before that first pass. The first pass is usually 12 hours then they increase from there. They do not have to be on the weekends -- for instance my son's days off are Wednesday and Thursday so he comes home late on Tuesday and goes back at the same time on Thursday.
The Abode for the most part is clean and has some real nice folks working there. I think you will find as in most things that they vary. And yes there is a waiting list -- you can count on at least a 30 day wait for a bed -- unless TDC gets some more of them approved.
As to leaving early -- that may happen too but don't count on it. Their assignment is usually 90 days. Sometimes if a person has all their requirements finished they may be reccommended for early release -- 10 to 15 days early.
It does get easier one the passes start and knowing you can get regular phone calls home. My son calls at night to talk to the kids and calls me at lunch every day -- Ma Bell is really grinning and saying ":Can you hear me now"
Good luck

3 THE BOP HAS REQUESTED HE BE ALLOWED TO GO TO THE HWH 85 DAYS EARLY UNDER THE 2ND CHANCE ACT. WHAT ARE HIS CHANCES OF GETTING ALL OR PART OF THE EARLY RELEASE DATES?
4. WHAT IS THE STAFF LIKE
5WHAT ARE THE ACCOMODATIONS LIKE
6.BY NOT BEING A DRUG OFFENDER WHAT WILL HIS CONDITIONS BE
7.IS THE HOUSE ALLOWING INMATES TO LEAVE EARLIER TO HOME CONFINEMENT THAN THEIR APPOINTED TIME
8. IF THE ANSWER IS YES TO THE ABOVE WHAT IS THE DETERMINING CRITERIA
