Default Visitng and jeans

I read that no denim is allowed at Kern Valley, Delano? Is that all jeans with zippers? I only own jeans so that would not be good. Thanks, S

No blue denim. You can wear black, white, pink jeans provided they aren't too tight and the metal passes the detector. Honestly, I never wore zippers or snaps there because I set it off every stinking time. I ripped the metal out of my visiting clothes for KVSP.

One question, and this maybe controversial - at the visiting centre waiting outside to be processed through. We are asked to line up according to the times for our appointment. Fair enough. But why do some of the women lie about their appointment times, just so they can stand in front of you, until the officer calls out for the 8am or 8.30am appointments? This happened to me on 3 separate occassions

Do they move back to their spot when the times begin to be called?

I know when I was visiting KVSP a lot of people knew one another well and liked to use that time to socialize. If I had an 8:00 appt. and someone with a 9:00 wanted to chat up another 8:00 until time to go in, no skin off my nose.

Frankly, it all gets messed up once you're inside anyway. I had 8:30's called before my 8:00 regularly. If it's really an issue, talk to the visiting Sgt. and ask that they make an announcement to respect appointment times. They're not shy about doing it and it's a neutral message.

Having just had 2 visits to KVSP I want to say I found the KVSP ladies a breathe of fresh air. Very friendly and helpful. Having previously visited federal prisons I know that is not always the case.
The ladies were lovely and some recognised me from being on here.
The visiting process was lengthy but worth it as the visiting room was very relaxed and I got to spend to great days with my dear friend.
I met a fellow British lady meeting her fiance at KVSP for the first time. She and I live in the same area in the UK (Small world) We had planned to exchange details and missed each other at the end of visiting,so if you come on here lovely lady PM me and we will keep in touch. I was so happy for you that it went well, such a lovely romantic story.
So thank you KVSP ladies for the help and the laughs.
Not sure if I will see you again but I hope so.

Eeee! I've been waiting anxiously for this post. So, so happy to see it.

I'm glad you had this experience and I tend to agree. I have a soft spot in my heart for the KVSP fam because they were so good to me as a new visitor. I miss you all and thank you for treating our Maytayah so well!

If you're having issues, speak to the Sgt. Truly. The majority of folks want things to go as smoothly as the rest of us. It's hard enough without added drama.

Default Visiting -- Vpass and calling inmate visiting

I have tried for two weeks to get an appointment using VPASS with no luck. Each time the message is no appts for a group of 4 . I go back to the site numerous times and still nothing. I also read that new appointments go up for Kern on Sundays== I read one site 8.0. pm and another 9 pm. Would like to know which time it is. I would greatly appreciate any information that will assist me in scheduleing an appointment. Ive called the prison Mon thru friday 7 to 8 am and then Mon thru Friday from 12=1pm == The phone literally always rings busy. I will be traveling several hours and using the walkin visit is not going to guarantee a visit. Thanks for any information and tips anyone has on making an appointment.

Hi there the new visit appointments become available at 9pm on sunday night. They go very quickly so you need to be on at 9 to secure an appointment.
The phone is difficult and you need to keep ringing at the designated times it is possible as I have done it.
If you are unsuccessful you can always post on here and see if anyone is cancelling a visit.
I wish you luck its not easy but it is possible.
They are accomodating for those travelling along way.

I usually login at least 5min before 9pm and keep refreshing the page until the date comes up. All the appointments will be gone within a couple of minutes if not less. I’ve had friends call on Monday over 100 times but she eventually gets in, so just keep calling. Good luck

Default Dress Code

Hey ladies....i'm familiar with the dress code dos and don'ts...however, I have never tried to "do" my hair for visiting...i've ALWAYS stayed away from metal from my clothes to hair stuff, does anyone know if the metal detector sets off from bobby pins. I want to do my hair and I need to use my bobby pins, i've searched and searched for non metal ones, and I just can't find them...i've noticed a few ladies do their hair but unsure as to what they use. I have my next apt this sat....

Making appts for Kern Valley can be frustrating! For a while I only tried to use VPASS. Every Sunday night I would log in a few min before up to after the open time and i'm only needing an appt for 1, and it would say no apts available. When it would open at 8 pm, by 8:01, they were gone. When they changed it to open at 9 pm, by 9:01 there were no available apts for 1 person. I tried during the week, in the morning, afternoon and night...I did this for months, and even called the visiting, they said oh well, nothing they can do. He was getting mad thinking I just didn't want to go! I got the phone number and called and got frustrated, but learned quickly you have to sit and press redial over and over for however long it takes. Sometimes I get an answer quickly, sometimes it takes the whole hour....but i've only been able to get one with the phone. VPASS has NEVER worked for us. I just called and started late, got an answer within 20 min of trying...just keep calling. Some ladies get theirs only by VPASS...just have to find what works for you!

No metal in your hair, either. I mean I guess if it was discreet and you got through, then bonus. But if it sets off the detector you'd have to take it all down. I know they used to ask if I had pins in my hair.

There are plastic pins that you may be able to use. My hair is too straight and fine, they won't stay. But might be worth a shot!

The appts do go by fast. Majority of the time I can get an appt but there have been a couple of times I forgot to log on in time. So now I set my alarm to make sure I'm logged in a few mins before 9. I have called and got through but you do just have to keep calling and yes it is a pain but you will eventually get through.

I am so glad that Maytayah and Miamac have great memories of visiting. The week that I spent at Delano was interesting. The only conversations I had with Americans were with my Taxi Driver, he was so kind and helpful. The receptionist at the Hotel and the Guards. Little smiles, pleases and thank-you's and excuse me can you help while in the line for visiting was met with stoney silence (which I thought might be a language barrier) or a terse mono response. I had a kid throw his toy on the floor which hit my foot and was heavy, it left a bruise for a week. The kid said sorry and I told him that's alright it was just an accident. The Mother looked at me as though it was my fault. The second weekend was a lot better, a girl made small talk and introduced me to her friend. I swapped seats in the waiting room with one woman so she could chat with her friend. I wasn't being awful or stand offish. The only time I was spoken to by the women was when I was with my man. I was in California alone. Yes my choice. I was also very ill, my diabetes got out of control because the heat had destroyed my insulin while I was travelling from LA to Delano. As a result I got kidney failure and was rushed into hospital when I got back to UK with 4 days to live. Yes I am going back in October but I will not expect any friendliness while standing in line, although this time I will be travelling with a fellow Brit. Peace to you all

Aww, Linney I'm sorry. It seems that Delano causes more headaches and health issues for more long-distance travelers than it has a right to.

For what it's worth, the staff were rarely friendly. I would rate them from cold and professional to downright rude. I got used to it and I think it was only moving away from there that I realized how different it could be.

As for the other visitors, I typically had positive experiences. But, it's a mixed bag and some folks some times forget their manners. Also, there's been a lot of movement between facilities and for all I know the lovely ladies I'm thinking of are no longer there. I'm sorry that you weren't welcomed as warmly as I'd like to hear.

I certainly hope your visit in October is more pleasant.

And on that note...
I have no doubt anyone reading this probably doesn't need to hear it because it's the folks that need it that usually don't listen anyway. But here goes...
Even if you're hardened to it, KVSP is a rough place to visit. The staff can be difficult. The restrictions are harsh. We can be a family or we can be a clique. If you see a person in line who looks unfamiliar to you or to the process, go out of your way to at least smile at them. Offer to assist them or kindly point out where the pens or change machine are. You were new once, too. There will be another new person next week. Pay it forward. You did it for me and three years later I'm still grateful. Please remember that. Thank you.

My good memories of KVSP are mainly about the chance I had to visit my friend and spending time with him. The visit booking was a nightmare Vpass is a joke.
The ladies in line were fine with me friendly and helpful. Mind you I am quite outgoing so I was happy to initiate conversation. There was also a fellow Brit there so the line was fine with me.
I hope your next experience is better Linney444 remember the booking the line the processing are just all means to an end which is seeing your loved one.

If it's your first time, I'd give just a bit more wiggle room in case you get turned around or hit traffic.

Is your appt. at 8am? You can be on the grounds one hour before your appt. time.

Best bet is to be there early. If you get there and they have already passed out the passes for your appt group they will have you waiting outside until 11am with the people that don't have appts.

Hi,
How does one go about 'trading' appointments. I think I saw somewhere that someone was offering to do that. Do you just cancel at a certain time and the other person logs on then or ?
Thanks for any advice on this.

Cool Tank tops now allowed?

I have seen several female visitors getting through wearing tank tops. I knew sleeveless shirts were allowed but these are actual tank tops no more than an inch width on the shoulder area. I have not seen this allowed before. Is this a new rule allowing tank tops at visit? I've been scared to try it for fear of being sent back.
