Default Writer Researching Chowchilla

Hi there,

I am an internationally published author of books for teenagers (published by Disney*Hyperion in the US). I'm working on a book scheduled to be published in 2016 about two young women who have been friends all their lives, and it explores the aftermath of a manslaughter case, leaving one of the young women doing time in a California Prison I've based on Chowchilla. The book is entirely written in letters back and forth to prison. I've definitely had to suspend reality on how efficient the mail system is in prison, but I really want the rest of the experiences of my inmate main character (as well as the women she lives with) to be realistic and emotionally truthful.

I'm looking for information/anecdotes about day to day life, the mail system, the food, work programs, living conditions, slang and how inmates spend their time, and the emotional structure of the place. As well as the lives of the family and friends with inmates in prison and how they navigate the system. Is there anyone who would be willing to share their experiences with me? I would, of course, include you in the acknowledgements of the book as thanks for taking the time.

Thank you so much for checking this post out!

Oh dear, I'm sorry! Didn't realize I was breaking any rules. How do I go about seeking permission to post? Should I take this down?

I do want to clarify: I am not a journalist. I am a novelist who specializes in books for teenagers, specifically about hard subjects like drug abuse, disability, and grief, among other things. I am traditionally published with one of the largest publishers in the US, as well as in many other countries. (and I'd be happy to provide proof of this privately, I just don't like posting my pen name everywhere). My aim with the book I'm working on now is to tell the story of the incarcerated character and her best friend on the outside as authentically, honestly and sensitively as possible. There are a lot of teens who have family in the prison system that don't have much representation in the world of teen books, and my goal is to provide them with fiction they can relate to.
