Default TDC Style Thanksgiving

In spite of the hardships of prison and all that goes with it, today is a special day for those wearing white. The prison system makes a noble effort to provide plenty of food and most often it’s a two tray affair. One plate is to be eaten there in the chow hall and the other to be taken back to one’s housing assignment. Turkey, ham, a couple of kinds of veggies, cranberry sauce, stuffing, maybe deviled eggs, rolls or biscuits, maybe cornbread, a piece of pie, a piece of cake and maybe cookies. Just depends on the place. As always, the better meals to be seen are the ones at an I.D. unit and the not so good ones are likely to be found at a state jail. Transfer facilities are somewhere in middle. Most likely, the Walls and Goree will be the best of the best. I. D. units where you see guys doing a lot of time, life sentences and what not will also be places where better Thanksgiving Day meals are to be seen.
Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Fourth of July are the three big ones where food is concerned. Just now and until New Years, there’s a lot of little stuff in the form of cookies, hygiene, candy and handmade cards made by local churches in the area where a prison is situated that are reminders from the free world revealing that one is not forgotten in this world and we all have a place whether it be doing time on the inside or running the race here on the outside.
Some are thankful on Thanksgiving and some are not. Just depends on how the cup looks from one’s perspective to do with being half empty or half full, ya know? I’ve been on both sides of that picture and so…..like Neil Young said in a song one time “I’ve been first and last, look how the time goes passed”………and……….this too shall pass. Better days are ahead for most folks in TDCJ if they’re not on death row or on their death bed. Like most things in life, doing time inside takes time to get out and no doubt, it’s a restless holiday for some as they ponder what their families, friends and former associates are doing out here today. Much like many of you who wonder what he or she is doing in there………we’re all thinking of each other and hoping and praying for the best. One day at a time, you’re getting closer to the day when freedom comes calling. If nothing else, today can be a day of thanks for one less day to do on a prison sentence, some good food and a football game or a good book or a game of dominoes or writing a letter to one of you. Happy Thanksgiving. Go Cowboys.
