Hi Renee! Is Chris on the upper or lower yard? My son is on the lower yard and I also will be visiting there on Sunday. You do know that you can only visit every other weekend? Right? A thru K on weekend and L thru Z on the next weekend. Fridays are for everyone and tends to be very crowded. Joey (my son) tells me that Tyger River is the most strict institution he has ever been in. He has been in Kirkland, Evans, Lee, Kershaw, Perry, McCormick and I think I may be leaving one out. Can't remember as it has been a really long 7 1/2 years so far.

You need to get to Tyger River early as the visiting rooms are small and both times I have been lately people were either turned away or you have to wait until someone leaves to go in. This is especially true for Fridays. On the lower yard you have to take off your socks and shoes and they look at the bottom of your feet and between your toes and two weeks ago, they were making people pull their pockets out to see that they were empty. The upper yard (where you visit on Fridays) doesn't seem to be quite that strict. We had to take off our shoes and they looked in them but we didn't have to take off our socks. Just don't wear "stinky" tennis shoes.

Generally everyone there has been super nice to me. Although they are very very strict. One hug/kiss when the inmate comes in and when they leave. I kind of got a little upset a couple of weeks ago when I was visiting my son. The tables are round and he was sitting in a 12 o'clock position and I was sitting at a 5:30 position. The guard came over and was a little gruff and told me that I need to sit "directly across" from the inmate. I sweetly responded that I was sitting directly across from "My son". She then told me to move (HER EXACT WORDS) 3 inches to the right. So I was a little ticked but I guess she had a job to do.

Over all other than being strict, it is a good institution. Except for one dorm, I think, there is very little violence and most people just seem to want to do their time and get out. Also your inmate can get a job in PI and get paid minimum wage. Which is a help. Good luck.

Doing a liver scan on Monday to find out if it is in his liver. If so, no need for further surgery or treatment. If not, we will schedule surgery.

Hey everyone. My ex (whom I still love dearly) was incarcerated a little over a year ago. Our relationship ended over 7 years ago (due to drug addiction). We maintained some contact over the years, but the last time we talked face to face was over 2 and a half years ago. I found out in Jan. where he was, and wrote to him. We've been in constant contact since then. I am in the process (whew...what red tape) of seeking visitation privileges.

I'm just really sad and confused right now. My (our) situation is really complicated. I really hope to make/meet new friends here.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my long and drawn out introduction!

Hi Mschievous,

That wasn't long and drawn out at all. It was interesting to read I thought. I'm glad you're back in his life...to lend support. This must be a hard time for both of you.

G'luck......... Blessings,

Doni

Annie-Doll and tyvm, thank you for the warm welcome. I am new here...learning to navigate myself around the site! I'm hoping to be able to post a little about my situation (as not to hijack this thread...).

Once again, many thanks for the welcome!

Default I just heard from Barb!!!!!!!

I just heard from Barb - the test on her husband was delayed due to a broken machine , but it did finally get done and they are awaiting the results. The results are in, but now they are waiting for the MD to call and tell them what those results are.

She promised to update us as soon as she can - can we get the power of prayer going EXTRA?

YES!!!!!! There is NOT NOT NOT cancer in R.'s liver; the MD just called! This is the best news possible and the MD is going to get the operation set up ASAP to get the melanoma out.

Please include thanks with those prayers now too; there is still cancer to be fought, but the odds are now MUCH more on our side.

Hello everyone! I have a 18 year old son at Evans. He is also a paraplegic in a wheelchair. Does anyone know anything about paraplegic in prison? He was sentenced to 21 years voluntary manslaughter (vehicle accident).
This is our first experience with jails/prison, its alot to comprehend.

Sweetnsassy, I am familiar with your son's case. I am from the area also. Just wanted to say that my heart goes out to you as a mother. I am a mother-in-law (feel like a mother) to a man in prison and it is very hard. Feel free to pm me anytime.

Welcome to the forum Sweetnsassy. I am so sorry about your son. I hope that you stay around here for a while. This place (board) has helped a lot of moms get through prison life.

Hello, My son is 18, 17 when committed the crime. My son in a paraplegic in a wheelchair. He had a car accident in which a little girl died. The media became involved and we live in a small community. They sentenced my son to 21 years, but the judge said he would not take away his good time or work time. My son has never been in trouble before. He was on house arrest for 1 year, after they sentenced him he was able to stay home for 25 more days, because he had to have surgery. He had to get better to go to prison. Everyone thinks that Judge Cottingham was too harsh in his sentencing. We asked our lawyer to state that he would never drive again, be on house arrest, pay restitution, anything. My son is only 18 years old. He will never live in prison for 21 years. His release date on the scdos is year 2025. He sent me a letter saying the social worker told him that he didn't wont have a parole date. How do we find out, the judge didnt say he would have a parole date. This is the first time we have ever been affliated with the prison system. So far, its all politics, its who you know.

I know how you feel. Actually most of us here had never been affiliated with the prison system before this time. My son was 16 when he comitted his crime and was sentenced to 20 years the day after he turned 17. I also thought that he would never live to serve his time. He is now down to 9 1/2 years left. (he has to serve 17 years or 85% of the 20 yr sentence). I would call SCDC and ask for his case worker. I'm not sure if it would do any good or not.

My son and a lot of the people here who have loved ones in prison didn't have a prior record either. My heart breaks for you and your son. You will learn but it will take time and it does get easier even though you think it won't. We are here to help you and encourage you. Please feel free to ask anything, vent, cry or scream. Trust me, a lot of us have been in your shoes.

Barb

Do you guys know of any paraplegics in prison. My son was in Kirkland R&E. They told me on the phone that he would be there at least 45 day. They sent him to Evans after only 11 days. I think it was because of all the medical stuff that they have to do to him. He requires around the clock care. We sent doctors letters with him and the lawyer did also call before he went. They have to do his bowel program every other day and it takes approx 1 1/2 hours to do this. Well they refused to do his bowel program and his letter to me was that he was having bowel accidents on himself. The skin of a paraplegic is so sensitive, if this keeps up more than a few times he will start to get skin sores. His medical needs is what worries me the most. Thanks guys for listening to my problems, but I guess we all have problems. Im glad I found this site.

Hi Friend,

I'm very sorry for what's happened to your son....to the little girl...to EVERYBODY involved. I really am.

Politics? Naw? Never.

PTO has a really good seach function. Try different key words.... medical, para/quad, surgery........... those are just a few...get creative. The answers may be from a few years ago...that's fine. Take what you can....even PM the person to see if they're still around and what transpired. Gain knowledge. Turn over every rock.

Skin breakdown is serious. This will lead to decubitus (sp?) ulcers. YOU KNOW this. They can go all the way to the bone. I'm sure you're not hearing anything you don't know.

I mainly hang out in the Federal Forum. In the federal system there are FMC (federal medical centers). What about at the state level? There has to be something for your son.

Also...... I do NOT know what I'm talking about (somebody will)..... can your son file for Post Sentencing Relief? Maybe argue about the length of the sentence, his age........ ask for a reconsideration? Maybe this is called something else. Check it out though.

You don't live in a large area (me either, only about 55k...... then ALL rural).....but maybe there is a law school near you --- in a close city --- that would like to help you. How about one of the national societies.... para/quads....... I don't know the circumstances.....but if alcohol was involved maybe even the unlikeliest of groups would carry some weight...those such as MADD. Sure they are totally against impaired driving...... but these are PEOPLE too...and have hearts. I bet if you found the right person... they'd help you look into this.

I wish you, your son and the family/friends of the little gir a lot of luck. I hope you can ALL find peace somehow.

Blessings,

Donna

Welcome Sweetnsassy. I'm sorry to hear about your son. I don't know anything about services for paraplegics at SCDC. I do know that it's a struggle to get specialized medical care and something that you will have to monitor and stay on top of. Others at this site who have fought for medical care for their loved ones will be an invaluable source of information. Hang in there. We will support you and help you get through this.

Contact the medical directors office. That number is somewhere in this forum. As the law reads right now in SC, Voluntary Manslaughter is under the 85% truth in sentencing law. Now that law might change - Chief Justice Tolar is requesting a prison reform study. As part of that, Mr. Ozmint, Director of Prisons in SC, is hoping the truth in sentencing can be reduced to 75% (and so am I and everyone else in this forum). As the law is right now, anything under truth in sentencing is non-parollable. Seriously - make the medical directors office know you on a first name basis. Don't hesitate to send certified letters from your son's doctor(s). Make the prison system spend some money on your son and know that this will be costing them the entire time he is in there. Play up (for lack of better words) that medical BIG TIME. They don't want to spend this kind of money for the next 17 years. They also won't like lawsuits because of lack of care to a parapalegic (sp?).
