Post ARTICLE: Meth use has become a epidemic in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. According to the surgeon general, methamphetamine use has become epidemic in Arizona.

A forum hosted by the Tucson Catholic Diocese yesterday featured 50 community leaders plus Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik and U-S Surgeon General Richard Carmona.

Carmona says that Arizona leads the nation in 12- to 17-year-olds who use methamphetamine and cocaine.

He also says that about seven percent of Arizona youths in that age group have at least tried meth or cocaine, compared with three percent nationwide.

Carmona says it is not clear why so many Arizona kids have tried the highly addictive drug, but easy access to the drug here may be one reason.

Dupnik says meth use is a factor in many violent crimes, including carjackings and murders in the Tucson area.
