I drive just over 3 hours one way. Staying over for the weekend would be great, but not an option due to our dogs. I used to feel really bad about how far I had to drive - until I realize that most people that I talk to in the visiting room travel just as far or further. (God bless them - may we all travel safely!) But now I count my blessings - I was able to purchase a reliable car, the roads I drive are very nice, and it's super-scenic going out there. I'm blessed. Now, if only I can find somebody to share the ride with... it'd be nice to have somebody to keep me company, plus I know how it is when you're worried about your vehicle making it to your destination. I'd love to help make it possible for somebody to see their loved one.

18+/- hours from South Carolina to upstate NY! It's a hard long trip especially when I'm the only driver but I do it just for him at least every 2 months I'm a full time college student

Default My Drive to Avenal

My drive was 13 hours three times a month one way. I live in AZ and he was in Avenal. Thank God they just moved him to Chino. I have not been there yet but they say it will cut my driving down 7 hours.

Takes me just a few minutes..in the same town...but that will change soon...as soon as they take him out of reception and onto his permanent prison.

If he stays in the county jail then it's 30 minutes by lightrail, 10 minutes by car. If he's transferred the nearest correctional facility it's a 40 minute drive. I drove there to pick him up when he was released after his first bid and it's a very long, dark, desolate drive. I was very spooked going because I was alone and and never driven that far by myself before. You pretty much get off the freeway and are in the middle of nowhere. Thank goodness for GPS. I was so glad he rode back with me.

I don't think I'd want to go to that correctional facility to visit. They don't tell you if your family member is in a psych unit and the the visits are extremely specific as in time constraints based on which unit they're housed in. It's not like the county jail at all where you just show up and can get a visit up until almost 10pm. I'll hate it if he's transferred out to the boonies again, but more than likely he will be.

I don't intend to drive from California to New Mexico. I am visiting for Thanksgiving with my 6 mo old daughter and want to go every 3 mo if possible so he can see how much she is growing and she can get to know him.

He is 300 miles away now, so its a 5 1/2 hour drive there and 5 1/2 hours to get home. All for a 2 hour visit one weekend a month.

i will have to drive around 4 hours one way, haven't done it yet, just waiting for him to say that he can have visitors. My mom is only 1/2 hour away from him so i will be able to stay there and maybe get in 2 visits before i have to come back.

I drive 4 hours to see my boyfriend. So worth it but dang. I work Friday and Sat. nights so Im left with Sunday (i'm thanksful for) but that means I cant often and go and stay for the weekend. So end up waking up at 3:30 or so.. and taking off for my day of driving! Through my hair up and glasses on and have my comfy jamies on untll I get about 20 mins from him and change/get myself together at a gastation. 4 hour visit and 4 hour drive home!! Makes for such a long day. I was going once or twice a month but have skipped last month to save a lil extra for Christmas. He deff understands! Gas sucks! And the money you spend while there to eat, Im not going in empty handed. Ugh, is his time up yet??
