Anybody have any information on federal time? I'm looking at 18 months for contempt. I've been told I can self-surrender, but I'm not too interested in having to drag people a long way. I can also surrender locally and they'll transport me. What is the advantage of self-surrender?

Well, I imagine that the advantages of it are somewhat self-evident, you know when you are going in, you have time to square away any outstanding matters you have, organise anything you have to. I wasn't expecting to go to jail, so I was completely underprepared. You may find more helpful information over at the Federal section.

Hi DC,

It's good to know you have the choice. Just remember, sometimes sitting in a hot holding cell at court in shackles, then heading out for a nice long trip to jail (in my case, connected to 5 others by bellychain connectors) may not be preferable. SS lets you dress how you want, have a full goodbye with family, and avoid the humiliation and discomfort of chains (at least until you get booked in).

Good luck.
