Default Legislature passes several sentencing reform bills

Legislature passes several sentencing reform bills
By BOB JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The Alabama House passed eight bills Tuesday in a package supported by Gov. Bob Riley to reform Alabama's sentencing procedures and help ease overcrowding in state prisons.
The bills were recommended by the Alabama Sentencing Commission, created by the Legislature in 2000 at the urging of then-Attorney General Bill Pryor because of concerns that sentences for the same crime often varied from court to court and from one part of the state to another.
